Doll eyelashes, bouffants of tumbling curls, pixie crops, geometric eyeshadow, and slicks of eyeliner. Welcome to the Swinging 1960s! Here, I've compiled beauty lessons from some of my favorite beauty icons who emerged from the era. Uncover which product was used by three of these It Girls, the surprising inspiration for Twiggy's famous eye makeup, and more! Twiggy "I often put on two or three [pairs of false lashes] at a time," Twiggy told Woman's Own in 1967. She drew lines under her eyes to mimic how eyelashes looked on ragdolls. "I sketch them first lightly with black eyeliner, then I d ..read more

Vintage Beauty: Elsa Schiaparelli's Perfumes

Significantly intertwined with fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli's imagery are the watercolor paintings Marcel Vertès created for her beauty campaigns. Schiaparelli's fragrances Shocking, Sleeping, and Le Roy Soleil were brought to life through Vertès' bold brush strokes, pulsating candied colors, and a glittering cast of characters including harlequins and gamines. The ads showcase Schiaparelli’s perfume bottles and lipsticks, but with a playful wink and often having the perfume taking on a humanoid form. The beauty campaigns weren't the only time artist Marcel Vertès and Schiaparelli coll ..read more

Find out which famous perfume both Rita Hayworth and Merle Oberon loved, how Lena Horne was the original glamour girl to start a cosmetics line while her daughter shares the secret to Lena's eyelashes, and more! Rita Hayworth "Who, me?" Rita Hayworth purrs as she flips her face into frame in Gilda. As the pandemic wears on, I find myself reaching more to books for a much needed break. I read books set in the roaring 20s with glittering bright young things, ornate Rococo palaces housing French royalty, writings on the houses of Dior and Givenchy, and found comfort in the familiar surroundings of childhood favorites, the history of beauty, and more! Here are some highlights from the 46 books I read this past year. Biographies: Film legends, French Rococo, and Royalty I love a nice in-depth biography. Starting in August, I enjoyed reading books about Rococo era France, in particular ..read more

DRESS: ASOS SHOES: Forever 21 PEARL HAIR PIN: DIYDecembers always put me in a reminiscing mood, and this year especially has me feeling extra nostalgic while we navigate necessary Covid-19 precautions. Winter itself reminds me of twisted candy cane cookies, snow, and ballet dancers performing Swan Lake and The Nutcracker! I was just thinking about how last year, I got to attend a ballet performance in person for the first time with my friend Jess! My childhood was spent in awe of ballerinas. Marching straight to the ballet section at the library, I checked out books on ballet positions and bi ..read more

Fashion in Film: Literary Heroines

In this edition of my series diving into cinematic costumes, I wanted to spotlight literary heroines that have come to life in film. I picked three characters who made a huge impression on me growing up: Anne Shirley, Elizabeth Bennet, and Jo March. Anne of Green Gables (1985) and Pride & Prejudice (2005) specifically were my introduction to a whole new genre of costumes and film as a child: the period piece. Almost as inspiring as the headstrong characters wearing them, were their costumes: ribbons, straw hats, delicate ginghams and plaids, high necks and ruffles, muddy skirts, puffed sl ..read more

Needing a break from thinking about serious things, I wanted to share this makeup look I did a few weeks ago! My inspiration? Wanting to play with some new (to me) products (like the Colourpop Mint to Be Eyeshadow Palette *!), the 60s, and mint chocolate chip ice cream! Colourpop Mint to Be Eyeshadow Palette * and Colourpop Flux Eyeshadow * Undoubtly the star of this makeup look is Colourpop's Mint to Be Eyeshadow Palette! Mint is one of my favorite colors, so I was extra excited to dip into this palette, which didn't disappoint! Colourpop's shadows really pack a punch, and the lighter shade ..read more
