The Toyota Corolla remains the most popular vehicle in Poland. After slowing down in March (+1.2%), the Polish new car market returns to vigorous growth in April at +25% year-on-year to 43,224 sales. This way, the year-to-date tally is up 15.7% to 179,488. Toyota (+39.6%) vastly outraces the market to 18.5% share with over 8,000 sales with Skoda (+24.3%) also in great shape at #2 with 12.3% of sales vs. 11.2% so far this year. Skoda Kodiaq sales are up 25.5% in April. Next generation pictured. 19,546 new cars found a Czech buyer in April, a 6.1% year-on-year improvement, The year-to-date tally is therefore up 3.2% to 77,151. Skoda (-7.4%) vastly underperforms in its home market, dropping to a still ultra-dominant 32.8% share. The Dacia Logan is #1 at home for just 13 sales. After freefalling -23.5% in March, the Romanian new car market rallies back up 34.6% year-on-year this month to 13,276. This means the year-to-date volume is now only a tiny fraction in negative at -0.7% to 46,505. The VW Golf hits its highest market share at home in almost four years. The German new car sales market is up a very robust 19.8% year-on-year in April to 243,102 units. However we remain -21.8% below the pre-pandemic volumes of April 2019 (310,715). The year-to-date tally is up 7.8% to 937,887. The Honda Vezel hits its highest ranking in almost 10 years. New vehicle sales in Japan slow down their fall in April at -11.2% year-on-year to 310,346 units. Sales of regular cars are down -5.7% to 207,536 while kei car registrations plunge another -20.7% to 102,810. The year-to-date volume is now down -16.7% to 1,441,486. VW Polo sales are up 282.6% in April. New car sales in the UK mark 21 consecutive months of year-on-year gains in April, but just: volumes are up 1% year-on-year to 134,274 units. This remains -16.6% below the pre-pandemic sales of April 2019. The year-to-date tally is up 8.4% to 679,822. Once again and somewhat worryingly, the market growth is only due to soaring fleet sales up 18.5% to 81,207 and 60.5% share vs. 51.5% a year ago whereas private sales sink -17.7% to 50,458 and 37.6% vs. 46.1% in April 2023. Hyundai Kona sales are up 152% in April. According to estimates by local consultancy DesRosiers Automotive, the Canadian new light vehicle market is up 14% year-on-year to an estimated 164,000 units, yet still below the 180,000+ units secured before the pandemic. This solid growth rate is partly due to a weak year-ago result, April 2023 being the slowest month of that year in terms of SAAR.
