QOTD: Did You Watch F1 This Weekend?
The Truth About Cars
by Tim Healey
17h ago
Formula 1, as a global racing series, is immensely popular. It is, however, generally considered to not be a popular with an American audience, though its popularity seems to be growing in the States. The perception is that F1 struggles -- or, past tense, struggled -- to gain a foothold in the States because so many races are held while most of us are sleeping, and there aren't many American drivers, and the racing can be sometimes boring. On the other hand, F1 has recently grown in popularity in this country, thanks in part to the Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive. In fact, the se ..read more

Used Car of the Day: 2012 Land Rover LR4
The Truth About Cars
by Tim Healey
19h ago
Usually when we feature a Land Rover in this space, it's a classic Defender. There's a good reason for that, they're cool. Today, we're going with a more-mainstream Land Rover offering -- a 2012 Land Rover LR4. This appears to be a clean, well-maintained daily driver that needs no work. Yes, I know, a 12-year-old Land Rover with no apparent issues seems rare, but if the seller is being truthful you might be able to snag a bargain, though the miles are kind of high. Our seller says the timing chains and air suspension are working well and the mileage is about 175K. It's a base trim. The aski ..read more

The 2025 Genesis GV80 Got a Range of Updates But a Modest Price Bump
The Truth About Cars
by Chris Teague
23h ago
Though it’s hard to celebrate more midsize SUVs on the American car market, Genesis has consistently been one of the more compelling options in several segments. The automaker updated the GV80 SUV for the 2025 model year, giving it a range of improvements, and recently announced pricing for the model shows that it didn’t increase the cost of entry by a large amount. The 2025 GV80 starts at $59,050, including a $1,350 destination charge. Pricing ranges to $80,650 for the top 3.5T Prestige AWD model. Two powertrains are on offer, including the base turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine m ..read more

Fisker is Reportedly Closing its California Headquarters
The Truth About Cars
by Chris Teague
23h ago
While a few startup automakers have broken through with appealing vehicles and somewhat sound business practices, Fisker never really had solid ground under its feet. The automaker has recently warned that bankruptcy could be imminent if an investor or buyer doesn’t step in, and we’re now hearing reports that the company is shuttering its California headquarters. Business Insider reported that Fisker is in the early stages of closing its location in Manhattan Beach, CA, citing sources within the company. The publication noted that workers will be moved to the company’s other location in La P ..read more

Apple is Reportedly Considering a Partnership With Rivian
The Truth About Cars
by Chris Teague
1d ago
Though it never spoke publicly about its automotive ambitions, Apple was almost certainly developing a car before reportedly abandoning its work in recent months. We’re now hearing that it might not give up completely, as new reports point to the tech giant partnering with an existing OEM, which in this case appears to be Rivian. DigiTimes reported that Apple is exploring a partnership with an EV startup, citing “speculation among supply chains.” The company’s years of development work likely yielded valuable knowledge on autonomous vehicles and EV technology, and teaming up with a new but e ..read more

QOTD: What Tech Would You Mandate?
The Truth About Cars
by Tim Healey
2d ago
Earlier today I went on a bit of a rant about why I don't think, at this point in time at least, that automatic emergency braking shouldn't be mandated to be standard in new cars. Of course, it will be starting in 2029. My feelings on that specific issue aside, there probably are some pieces of safety technology that should be mandated to be present in cars. Or, perhaps, consumer protection tech -- maybe it should be made so that our cars aren't hoovering up our data? Maybe the government should force OEMs to bring back knobs and buttons in interior design, so people aren't distracted by tou ..read more

Report: Honda e:Ny1 to Drop Terrible Name
The Truth About Cars
by Matt Posky
2d ago
Honda is said to be changing the naming of its electric cars after customers, particularly those in China, found its name to be exceptionally difficult to pronounce. However, they weren’t the only ones. Europeans likewise didn’t appreciate the name, nor the odd choice of punctuation and capitalization that seems to plague some all-electric vehicles. Your author has a admittedly ludicrous theory that some manufacturers have been giving compliance EVs terrible names because they subconsciously hope that people won’t buy them. This is pure speculation, obviously, and probably incorrect. But it ..read more

New White House Program Provides Funding to Help Smaller Auto Suppliers Make Transition to EVs
The Truth About Cars
by Chris Teague
2d ago
The federal government has pumped billions into EV incentives and charging infrastructure initiatives, and now, it’s automotive suppliers’ turn at the bank. The Biden administration recently announced more than $100 million in funding to help smaller suppliers adapt to the changing automotive world. Around half of that money comes from the Department of Energy to help internal combustion engine suppliers retool to make EV parts. Another $50 million provides grants of up to $300,000 for the companies to make their factories greener and improve cybersecurity. Suppliers have been in a tight sp ..read more

Opinion: Automatic Emergency Braking Mandate is Misguided Overreach
The Truth About Cars
by Tim Healey
2d ago
Sometimes, government regulations make so much sense, you wonder why they weren't passed before. And sometimes, they make sense when taken at face value, but not as much when you think it through. That, I think, is the case with the recent rule that requires automatic emergency braking to be standard on all new cars starting with the 2029 model year. I realize that whenever someone like myself criticizes a safety regulation, we're putting ourselves in an unpopular position. After all, who doesn't like safety? Who doesn't like fewer pedestrian deaths and collisions between cars? Won't someone ..read more

2025 Mercedes-AMG CLE53 Cabriolet Maintains Brand’s Commitment to Convertibles
The Truth About Cars
by Matt Posky
2d ago
Mercedes is launching a convertible version of the Mercedes-AMG CLE53, showcasing the manufacturer’s commitment to convertible models. If you’re hoping to purchase a drop-top vehicle from a manufacturer that doesn’t specialize in six-figure automobiles, this probably isn’t the best period in history to be shopping. However, you do have a few options via off-road focused SUVs and some mainstream sports cars. Still, the only companies that seem to have retained any real focus on convertibles are the European luxury brands — with Mercedes-Benz and BMW arguably leading on that front. The good ne ..read more
