Words by Tyler Brower and Robin Vieira Pictures by Tyler Brower Truly, which is better? Flying across the pond for mountains that offer something new? Loading up a car for a drive out of the city and into the snow? Or, how long do we let the water run when we do dishes? How high do we keep the heat on at night while we sleep? Comforts exist everywhere we go- this is our privilege, and ironically, a big part of what we try to escape when leaving home for an adventure.  But need we go far? For our group of friends, our answer was no. We live in Bend, Oregon, a once-small high ..read more

Words by Zachary McCarthy It’s mid April and to my Huskies dismay, the snow in my backyard has now melted away. The skiing is done and it’s time for me to start shifting gears to the trail running season ahead. I have to be honest with you all, I don’t run in winter and this makes the transition crucial for the month ahead. I’m now in my second week of running and I keep thinking about how good I felt last season and how bad I feel now. To some extent, I feel almost disappointed in myself but on the other hand, I need to take a step back and give myself a bit of time to get back to wh ..read more

Words by Norrøna Ambassador Hilary McCloy It is that time of year when one season of sports is winding down and another one is starting to ramp up. The snow is melting in town, shorts are coming out but winter keeps on delivering up in the higher elevations. I find it can be an exciting time and we can get over-amped to jump into summer sports too quickly or without enough planning.  The key to successfully transitioning from one sport/activity to the next is to understand how they differ in regards to load on the body. Is one a power sport (ie. bike) and one an impact (ie. runni ..read more

Words by Ambassador and world’s youngest woman to ski solo to the South Pole, Hedvig Hjertaker. Antarctica is infamous for being the coldest, driest, and windiest place on Earth, so I needed clothing that was not only tough and durable but also tailored to my body. With a sled weighing over 100kg, I had to pack only the essentials. A few months earlier, while crossing Greenland, I had fallen in love with the Trollveggen Gore-Tex Pro jacket. I knew its wind-resistant qualities would make it perfect for Antarctica. Originally designed for climbing, this jacket had articulated elbow ..read more

Words by Responsibility Ambassador Charles Post The rivers and streams will swell, and the birds who cover great distances on their migration, like the cranes, plovers and puffins, will return to our valleys and forests, mountains and rocky coast. Spring is a time buzzing with activity when nature shifts from the stillness of winter to a season defined by energy and new life. Spring’s longer days will greet the trees who send new branches skyward to meet the sun, and the moose who ventures back to their hidden lakes soon free of ice. The ptarmigan who calls the wild mountains home wil ..read more

Words by content team member Elle Truax The snow stake reads 17” at 5am and I bust out of bed and straight into ski clothes. “Nora come!” I yell to my dog racing to get her outside and fed. I juggle which layers to bring for the ski day, try to remember to cook up some pocket bacon for the lift rides and don’t dare forget to brew some coffee. Oh, and ski boots, can’t forget those and thankfully I didn’t leave them in the truck in -20 degrees the night before. With a solid 75% chance that I remembered everything, I head for the ski resort. The beauty of living in Crested Butte is it’s ..read more
