The ISA's Olympic qualification process is quite convoluted.
But it kind of has to be: After all, there are only 48 total slots between two genders across an entire world of surfers, and they can't all come from the WSL. Every surfing nation gets 4 slots, and not all of one of them has a surfer represented on the CT (yet.)
To read the detailed breakdown of how it all works, click here. The Cliff's Notes version is that between the 2023 CT rankings and multiple ISA qualifiers over a two year time period, 46 of the 48 surfers had been decided by last month. However, the ISA/Olymp ..read more

For 99% of surfers north of Point Conception, December 28, 2023, was a day to do anything but surf. Santa Cruz’s pointbreaks were bombarded with west swell. Ocean Beach was buried under whitewater. Even Mavericks, which doesn’t look welcoming most days, had more stink eye than usual.
And yet an all-star tow squad – including Peter Mel, Jojo Roper, Lucas Chianca, Kai Lenny, Matahi Drollet, Andrew Cotton, Will Skudin and Nic von Rupp – descended on Mavericks nonetheless. Not to be outdone, locals Luca Padua, Hunter Murison and Michael Joshua held their own as well.

The system for packaging and shipping surfboards is archaic and wasteful.
From the surfboard manufacturers to the surf shops, everyone ships boards the same way: Wrap a board (or boards) in sheets of foam and plastic, and tape everything together. Then add bubble wrap, EPS foam scraps, throw it all in a box, and hope for the best in the hands of UPS.
Sure, it (mostly) works, but it also results in a tremendous of amount of waste, as the plastic is rarely reused, going straight to the landfill instead.
"I'd get these boxes in Hawaii every year, and I'd have all this garbage left ove ..read more

Last month, a crisp Saturday morning welcomed Space Coast Board Riders, Treasure Coast Board Riders, New Smyrna Beach Board Riders, and St. Augustine Board Riders Clubs to the home field of Jacksonville Beach Board Riders for the 2024 Florida Cup presented by Fat Tire. In an ode to the last time the Florida Cup was at the Jacksonville Beach Pier, conditions turned on once again for a showdown.
After what could’ve been a disastrous showing following the previous day's conditions, the heavy wind slop that began churning later in the afternoon brought in the swell needed for entertaining Saturday ..read more

"The Right" is a psycho slab that breaks way out in the middle of nowhere in Western Australia.
It's awe-inspiring in its beauty, but it's also terrifying. It's basically a rock shelf surrounded by deep water that folds waves in half. Unlike some other slabs, "The Right" can't be paddled into. It's physically impossible to catch a 12-foot open ocean swell without the help of a Ski, so towing in is the only option.

In an announcement from the WSL, today, Kelly Slater will be resurrected from his Championship Tour grave, receiving a wildcard entry into the 2024 SHISEIDO Tahiti Pro and Corona Fiji Pro – both events the 11x world champ has dominated in the past.
Slater lost his spot on Tour, you may recall, after falling behind the Mid-Season Cut during the Western Australia Margaret River Pro. Retirement, finally? Not quite.
Additionally, in Wednesday's announcement, the WSL confirmed the return of Carissa Moore as a wildcard into the Tahiti Pro. This c ..read more

If you break your back falling in the maw of Jaws, as Nathan Florence did in January of 2023, milk alone will not save you. The workout regiment he’s stuck to over the years was the reason he was able to surf eight weeks after cracking a vertebra.
Nathan has documented some of his sessions in and out of the gym. His latest endeavor was done in memory of a deceased veteran, Travis Manion. Manion’s family operates the Travis Manion Foundation, which develops programs, training and events to empower veterans and families of those who served.
Here’s the backstory on the foundation’s website: “On ..read more

On July 17th, 2000, Shannon Ainslie was attacked by two great white sharks while surfing Nahoon Reef in East London, South Africa. Miraculously, he lived to tell the tale. And years later, he did just that – told the story in his words – in the new video above.
“I had this feeling, like, I’m gonna die today,” Ainslie recalled. “Today’s my last day.”
Flashback to the year 2000. Ainslie was 13 years old then and, under the care of his single father, he and his siblings were left at the beach all day while dad worked. He gave them a surfboard, a loaf of bread, a bag of bananas, and wished them w ..read more

In December of 2018, Mikey February surfed his last event as a full-time surfer on WSL’s Championship Tour. Fellow South African Jordy Smith showed him the door and an equal 13th at the Billabong Pipe Masters. A blessing in disguise?
Since his departure from competition, Mikey’s repertoire has blossomed – from the boards he rides, to the trips he takes. And through his partnership with Channel Islands Surfboards, he and Britt Merrick have dialed in twin fin design to the point where Mikey has become synonymous with upper-echelon surfing atop two fiberglass skegs.
