Better late than never: My dear friend and groundbreaking rapper Gangsta Boo was recognized in the "In Memoriam" portion of the Grammys tonight. I guess the Recording Academy became aware of the outrage after she was left out of last year's February broadcast even though she died on January 1 . Thank you to my friend Tina for getting this shot of the screen, because I was too busy screaming to operate my phone. She deserves alllll the recognition. Here's a close-up of the beautiful photo used. She had a radiant smile. This was the second Boo surprise I got in a week. Earlier, I discovered an ..read more

2023 in Review: What Wendy Wore, Part 1

I've always been interested in the story-telling aspect of fashion -- on the societal level as well as the personal one. As I debated whether or not to write one of my old-school "What Wendy Wore" year-in-review posts in the midst of what's happening in the world, I realized that a lot of what I wore in 2023 reflected all my concerns and what I was doing to try to make a difference. So consider this a peek into the world as I experienced it through how I dressed for it. To be blunt, the year started in the worst possible way. I had been pleased with the #SlowFashion quality of my look for las ..read more

A Birthday Wish

Today is my birthday. I turned 56. Today was also the birthday of a little girl named Reem Ali Badwan — a birthday she shared with her adoring grandfather, Khaled Nabhan. Reem would have turned four today, but last month, she was killed by an Israeli bomb in southern Gaza. We know her name because... “SANS FARDS” Strikes Again

I'm devastated that Michael K shut down his long-running celebrity-gossip blog Dlisted this June. First, because Dlisted WAS the Internet for me from 2005 to 2010. Second, because he would have covered the hell out of today's wall-to-wall media coverage of Pamela Anderson's makeup-free face at Paris Fashion Week. Michael K was on the SANS FARDS (no makeup) beat (pun not intended, but it's staying) since at least 2009, when French Elle put an un-made-up Monica Belluci on its cover. Click for the original Dlisted story, at least until the archives vanish. By April 2012, Michael K was writing ..read more

Thoughts on 9/11

Post-Covid, I can't write or even think about 9/11 as I once did. I see that many people feel the same -- these comments were among those that caught my eye: On 9/11 in 2020, I wrote of my horror at this lack of perspective when the Covid death toll passed 200,000. A piece Jon Schwarz wrote for the Intercept resonated with me. Click for the article. Little did I know that three years later, the Covid death toll would be 1,140,278 in the U.S. alone, and we'd still be arguing over vaccines and masking. This comparison does nothing to diminish my personal grief over 9/11, of course, or the grie ..read more

What Wendy Wore: Black & White

It's been a long time since I did an outfit post, but glimpsing my all-time favorite supermodel, Linda Evangelista, gave me some fashion-blogging inspiration. Linda Evangelista at Bookmarc Linda was signing copies of Linda Evangelista Photographed by Steven Meisel at Marc Jacobs's Bookmarc store on Thursday, and the line to see her wrapped around the block. I got there early, so I never dreamed I wouldn't get in. But after I stood three hours in 90 degrees, the books ran out when I was two people from the door. OMG! The best I could do was take a photo of Linda through the window, stalker-sty ..read more

Happy Birthday, Gangsta Boo

My irrepressible and irreplaceable friend Lola Mitchell — aka Gangsta Boo of the trailblazing rap group Three 6 Mafia — would have turned 44 today. But, tragically, Lola died on January 1 in her hometown of Memphis. Lola wearing silver “BOO” rings I made her to perform at a Run the Jewels show in NYC in 2017. As I said in my previous blog post, I started writing a tribute to Lola the day I got the news, but I couldn’t finish it then. It all seemed unreal. A lot of people close to Lola had died much too young, including DJs Speakerfoxxx (35 years old) and Furoche (27, victim of an unsolved hit ..read more

Back for a Sweet Sixteen!

Sixteen years ago today, I posted a "placeholder" announcement on wbjewelry.blogspot.com, saying I'd be launching a blog soon. Two days later, a distressed Britney Spears fled a photo shoot clad in borrowed designer goods -- including one of my 18K gold poison rings -- and the blog posts started pouring out of me. Over the years, as people's creativity and traffic shifted to new social media networks including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, TikTok, and YouTube, I kept on blogging -- although I eventually migrated to my own wendybrandes.com URL. Of course, I joined all the social networks ..read more

I was sad to see that Richard Belzer died today, aged 78. Belzer first rose to prominence as a stand-up comic, but he became famous with a capital F when he was cast as television’s sardonic Detective Munch, a character he played on two different shows — Homicide and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit...
