We hear a legal decision that disagrees with our values and beliefs, and seems to us that it convicts the innocent or frees the guilty. It’s easy to cry that “the system is corrupt and politicized.” But maybe it’s just working impartially. One of the roots of polarization is that it’s insufficient to “win,” the other side also must “lose.” You listen only to those who agree with you and don’t tolerate other ideas. It’s not unusual for a professional sports league to admit after a game and review, that officials made errors in not making the right calls. Some of these affected the outcome of the game, including playoff and championship games. Those calls and the results have never been retroactively reversed to my knowledge. People don’t seem to realize that it’s too late to take preventive action about climate degradation. We’re in contingent action now, whether we like it or not. We need fire-resistant, flood-resistant, tornado-resistant homes. (We already have earthquake-resistant.) We need to prohibit building on coastlines and in forests, and stop insuring those who do so anyway.
