Today's photograph is from the Moon Overlook near Hanksville, Utah. The play of light, shadow, and color grabs the eye. Hanksville, Utah, is a small town that acts as an entry point to some of the most striking landscapes in the American West. The area is a haven for adventurers and photographers, featuring diverse geological formations and wide, scenic views. You can explore the rough terrain of Goblin Valley State Park with its unique rock shapes, or the vast, open spaces of Capitol Reef National Park. The region is full of opportunities for exploration and photography. If you've been to Ha ..read more

AI's Knowledge - Wisdom Gap

? "We can be knowledgeable with another man's knowledge, but we cannot be wise with another man's wisdom"– Montaigne We're all excited about AI. Everyone's talking about it. Everyone's trying to find ways to 'make it work for them.' Everyone's giddy and buying into the hype (well...maybe not everyone...but it feels like everyone). The hype is real, but so are the possibilities with AI, so I'm not going to discourage anyone from being excited about the future with AI. What I always try to do with any new technology or approach is ensure everyone understands the existing limitations. Before I ..read more

Goblin Valley State Park at Night

I traveled to Hanksville, Utah, in March to photograph the Milky Way. During my time there, the weather didn't cooperate well, and I only had one night of clear skies to do astrophotography. Here's the shot that I got. It isn't 'technically great', but it's pretty good. This image was made by taking a 2-minute exposure for the foreground and fifteen (15) 13-second exposures for the sky (and these sky images were blended in a program to remove noise). Captured with a Sony A7R IV and a Sony 16-35 f2.8 GM II lens. Sign up for Eric D. Brown, D.Sc. Technology, Data, People ... and photography Subs ..read more

I sold my business - and I (sometimes) wish I hadn't

This post will be different from most of what I write here as it will be more personal (but with some lessons learned that I hope are universal). From 2015 to 2022, I was CIO at Sundial Capital Research, the publisher of the very well-respected service called sentimenTrader. In 2021, the business was sold to a private equity firm, and by late 2022, I was no longer a part of the company. Let's go back to 2014 and look at the journey that led to the sale (and the lessons learned). I had just finished my doctorate and was looking for a way to get people to know about my research. While working o ..read more

AI in Business: Beyond Cost-Cutting

Artificial intelligence (AI) is being hailed as the 'next big thing,' which makes sense because AI can potentially transform an organization. With the allure of streamlined processes and better efficiency, viewing AI as a silver bullet for overhead reduction is tempting. Yet, this perspective is short-sighted. The actual narrative of AI is not one of 'displacement' but of enhancement, where technology and human ingenuity work together to create a more efficient future focused on the people within the organization. Misconception of AI as a Cost-Cutter Businesses, driven by the quest for effici ..read more

In the tradition of my 'Foto Friday' series, I will continue posting a photograph every Friday. These photographs may be new or older ones I've recently worked on. If you'd like to view more of my photography, you can do so on my dedicated photography portfolio or Instagram. While many people know and love the Moab area in Utah for the Slickrock, canyons, red rocks, and beautiful scenery, not as many people know about the Hanksville area. Maybe that's a good thing, but I highly recommend finding some time to check the area out. Hanksville is a small town with only a few places to eat and stay ..read more

The slop

When I was a kid, my grandparents raised hogs. I don't remember how many they had or for how long they had them, but I do remember them rooting around in the large wooded pens they were in. I remember them having piglets. I remember watching those piglets grow to be full-grown adult pigs. But what I remember the most is feeding the pigs. Sure, there was "feed" for the hogs that my grandparents bought at the feed store, but what I found the most interesting about 'all things hogs' was that the pigs were the most excited for the 'slop' that my grandparents fed them. This slop was leftovers from ..read more
