Sapiens By Yuval Noah Harari

Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari was absolutely one of the coolest and most fascinating books I’ve ever read. While I was reading it, I wanted to buy and give it to every person I love and say, you neeeeeed to read this and understand the history of humans! Harari is a masterful storyteller. He weaves a story about how homosapiens – despite our big brains, use of tools, learning abilities and social structures – were marginal creatures on earth for millions of years. So then, how did we become the most powerful animals on the planet? How did we manage to survive in such varying habitats, what was ..read more

Meet Our New Kittens

Say hello to our new kittens! We used to have two beautiful cats about 15 years ago, but my second son was allergic to them, so we had to find them a new home. Thankfully he’s grown out of his allergy, so we have been thinking about getting kittens for a while. What better time than now – with 3 teenagers in a house and covid cabin fever – to adopt two 12 weeks old rescue kittens from a local animal shelter? This is Cloudy. And this is Ginger. We absolutely loooove them and we’re so happy to have them in our lives! The post Meet Our New Kittens appeared first on Karen Cheng ..read more

Clearing my head

Wow this week has been brutal. How are you all doing? Looks like COVID-19 is here to stay – so my whole company has been told to work from home. Not a huge problem for us (I work for a tech company) and we’re all set up for remote working and accessing everything from the cloud. However, it feels like the whole world has been turned upside down. I jumped on my road bike for the first time in a years and went for a 20km spin around the river. The speed, the handlebars, my body position, my quads, the sensation of rubber tyres flying across the bitumen, the click of my derailleur changing my ch ..read more

Inspiration for the Tech Inclined: Curiosity

Ever since I started working in tech, I noticed a few things about the social media habits of “digital professionals”. They don’t do Instagram. They don’t do Facebook. If they want to flex their #blessed life with a quick #humblebrag, they do it on Twitter and LinkedIn – haha! Twitter and LinkedIn are such strange digital landscapes. They are like beasts, each with their own, unique pros and cons. Most times I’m left a bit cold and disillusioned. Sometimes, we experience an uncomfortable feeling while we’re online. We remember that our activity is being monitored, that our data is being sold ..read more

Surfing Lessons at Brighton Beach

Last month, we celebrated my sister’s birthday by taking Surfing Lessons! This is me and my two oldest boys. (I had to block out their faces, because they’re shy, easily mortified, and waaay too good looking to be on the internet.) So it was my first time surfing and I absolutely loved it!! I managed to get the hang of it quickly. And I could ride the waves to the shore easily enough. It was sooooo much fun. But, as you can see, the waves were embarrassingly small. I didn’t realise that going from “lying down on the board” to “standing up” in one fluid motion, required an action very similar ..read more

Hello to the Year of the Rat!

Also say hi to Wallace and Noodles. To my absolute horror, my friends went on holiday and “we” agreed to look after their pet rats. I’m not scared of rats. Or mice. I just don’t have much LOVE for living in the same house with creatures once known to be the carriers of The Great Plague. I’m also not a fan of their rat noises: they scratch and shuffle around a lot at night. And they wheeze and sneeze a lot too. Who would’ve known? It took me a few weeks to get over the GROSS factor. But then as weeks went by, I watched my son throw empty cardboard boxes, sheets of paper, toilet roll tubes, scr ..read more

Brought to you Shopbop I’m a sucker for gorgeous shoes… and these soft leather heels from Cult Gaia, do not disappoint! Mixing the on-trend elements of warm tones, woven details, kitten heel and a slight quirky style, they are super soft, comfortable and very cute. They are perfect to wear with relaxed summer dresses, neutral tones and casual jeans, but if you like to do sports, is better to get waterproof running shoes since these are good for any environment and weather. I actually had my eyes on another pair of Cult Gaia heels, but I picked these, because they were more work-friendly ..read more
