hat is art? Art is many things, of course. Art takes countless forms, is created in countless mediums, and serves countless purposes. Art is infinite. But perhaps the one thing that all art shares is a need, a desire, a thirst to communicate. Humans have been communicating via art since the beginning of time. When ..read more

he Bristol Renaissance Faire is an iconic Wisconsin destination/experience/place to eat a turkey leg while watching a guy get pelted with tomatoes. And while there’s still time to get ye olde arse to Bristol (its final weekend is Labor Day weekend), things are winding down. f you look up “one of the best Milwaukee bands of the 2010s,” you’ll find Space Raft. The psych/stoner-tinged rock band released a handful of instant-classic albums between 2014 and 2020, played a ton of shows, and even opened for Bernie Sanders. And though the group disbanded after the belated release of 2020’s Positively Space ..read more

On Friday, June 21, as Summerfest was in full swing at Henry Maier festival Park, a group was gathered at nearby Veterans Park to witness a spectacle that’s, well, a little tough to put into words. Nothing says “SUMMER” quite like the beach. And yet Milwaukee’s beaches can feel strangely underutilized during the summer months. The Great Milwaukee Summer is shaping up to be one for the books, a glorious four-month period stuffed with festivals, fairs, music series, conventions, and more. There’s only one thing that could possibly make it better—and much, much weirder. On Friday, June 21, Veterans Park will be the site of something called Baby You, “a public art event where a massive 112-foot long hot air balloon in the… Source ..read more

Animal Well, and the pleasures of not knowing
Milwaukee Record » Arts

I was roughly two hours into Animal Well before I realized what was going on. The game had opened simply enough. Four pixelated flames appeared and disappeared. My pixelated player character—a little Meatwad-esque blob of…something—popped out of a pixelated flower and landed in a pixelated labyrinth full of pixelated animals. From there, I hopped around and moved from one screen to the next. Source ..read more
