There are a few things to know about Old Guard Games. One, it’s a new independent tabletop gaming store located at 3132 N. Downer Ave., just across the street from UWM. Two, while it does carry some board games like Catan and Terraforming Mars, and stock Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon cards, it’s mainly focused on miniature-based wargames like Warhammer 40K and Star Wars: X-Wing. The Great Milwaukee Summer is shaping up to be one for the books, a glorious four-month period stuffed with festivals, fairs, music series, conventions, and more. I was roughly two hours into Animal Well before I realized what was going on. The game had opened simply enough. Four pixelated flames appeared and disappeared. My pixelated player character—a little Meatwad-esque blob of…something—popped out of a pixelated flower and landed in a pixelated labyrinth full of pixelated animals.
