AI and Artists? It’s Not What You Think… If you are old enough like me to remember when computers took over the graphics industry or when Photoshop replaced the photographic darkroom, just keep an open mind for a moment. (Not to disparage those using drawing by hand or making images with negatives and chemicals.) The point is: AI is just a tool, and a helpful one for artists. No, I’ll not be focusing on using AI to create art—that is for others to figure out. Rather, this is intended to show how artists can use tools such as ChatGPT to help. In the ever-evolving world of creative endeavors, st ..read more

My planned 2024-2025 Fulbright Fellowship has a dual focus: capturing the lesser-known areas of Iceland that are undergoing environmental transformations and the mythic locales referenced in Icelandic Sagas. My time will be divided equally between capturing these evocative photographs and engaging in research, teaching, and community involvement. This is my third time as a Fulbright arctic semi-finalist. As a visual artist, my work increasingly seeks to blend research, environmental awareness, and cultural narratives. My aspiration is to engage international audiences with new storytelling pe ..read more

Netherlands-American Foundation Grant Supported Fine Art Night Landscape Photographic Project This project, funded by a grant in 2022, was made in two areas in The Netherlands. First, I photographed in and near the Nieuw Land National Park in Flevoland. I became obsessed with the area because both the park and the province of Flevoland were created completely from reclaimed land in the 1960s and 1970s. Nieuw Land National Park was initially allowed to revert to its natural setting and was populated with animal species that would have roamed the region thousands of years ago. There was an atte ..read more

Ethereal Night Ice: Greenland Nightlandscape Photographs @SteveGiovinco

I became interested in Greenland several years ago when coming across what seemed a somewhat lost thread of Western history. Taking place in windswept, remote southern Greenland was the probable launch of an epic European exploration led by Norse Leif Eriksson to North America in c. 1000–centuries before other colonialists. Strewn throughout the small settlements were 11th-century ruins, casually spread among sheep farms and the primordial landscape. When I began creating night landscape photographs there, walking alone in near complete darkness was both terrifying and mesmerizing. I looked to ..read more

While attending the Bloedel Reserve Creative Residency on Bainbridge Island, Washington, I spent three weeks in this stunning “cottage”. Originally built for Prentice Bloedel, the house sits in the forest, but is on the edge of the park’s entrance. Highlights were deer coming to the window and being awoken by coyotes howling at night.
