Utah lawmakers made some changes to the state’s medical cannabis statute in 2023, including extending the duration of a medical cannabis card to one year. All cards issued from June 1, 2023, onward have a default one-year expiration date. So why is it that some cards are still not good for a year? Why do some of them have six- and three-month expirations?
The simple answer is that qualifying medical providers (QMPs) and limited medical providers (LMPs) have some discretion. If they feel it is in the best interests of a patient to have a shorter card duration, they can indicate as such in the E ..read more

Despite the fact that smoking cannabis is illegal in Utah, Beehive Farmacy does sell cannabis flowers. It is intended to be used in a special dry-heating device that heats the plant material to a temperature high enough to release the desired medicines without actually burning the material. At any rate, we are sometimes asked whether there is any medical benefit to eating the flower.
A medical cannabis pharmacist is the most qualified person to answer that question. If it is something you are wondering about, feel free to ask our pharmacist next time you visit either of our Beehive Farmacy loc ..read more

When voters took to the polls in 2019 to approve medical cannabis, many of us speculated that passing Proposition 2 would ultimately lead to even more alternative medicines in Utah. We are seeing such speculation come to fruition. For example, the state legislature just passed a psychedelics bill that is expected to be signed by the governor.
Under the legislation, limited numbers of medical providers will be able to administer psilocybin and MDMA as alternative treatments for certain medical conditions. The bill does not open the door to psychedelics as completely as current medical cannabis ..read more

Delta-8 THC was one of the hottest topics in medical cannabis last year. The hype has died down somewhat, leaving many who are new to medical cannabis unaware of its legal status. So what is that status, both nationally and here in Utah?
The simple answer is that delta-8 is illegal on both counts. But truth be told, the answer is more nuanced than that. This post will discuss the legal issues and how they pertain to the medical cannabis community. But first, an introduction to delta-8 is an order for those who might be new to the community.

Utah regulations allow for several different types of medical cannabis cards. The card most people get is called the patient card. People providing care for other adults can get a caregiver’s card, while out-of-state visitors planning to come to Utah can get a non-resident card. There is one more type of card that doesn’t get a lot of attention: the guardian card. It allows parents or legal guardians to provide medical cannabis to minors.
The basic process for getting a guardian card is similar to the process for getting any of the others. But there are some peculiarities with the guardian car ..read more

New patients are signing up for the Utah medical cannabis card every month. Signups have been so robust that the state reported more than 70,000 active card holders in the October 2023 program update. That being the case, it is always good to review the basics. A case in point is reviewing how to obtain a medical cannabis card in the Beehive State.
We are happy to report that getting a card is not particularly complicated. State lawmakers and regulators have made the process pretty simple. Just understand that you need to possess a valid card to purchase products from the Beehive Farmac ..read more

Every year the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) publishes its National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The report is designed to provide regulators and lawmakers a clear understanding of drug and alcohol consumption in the U.S. Its latest report was released in early November, and it takes a curious approach to cannabis. For the first time in the report’s history, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) collected information relating to cannabis consumption methods. Rather than focusing on where users get cannabis from, the survey’s questions were bas ..read more
