Research shows that firefighters are at an increased risk for skin cancer, particularly melanoma, due to their exposure to carcinogenic substances and UV radiation. We recently conducted free skin cancer screenings for the Brooklyn Center Fire Department to address this concerning research. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to supporting these courageous professionals, and we plan to extend these screenings to additional fire departments in the future. Our ... During skin exams, we frequently receive concerns about stretch marks, which are scars resulting from broken collagen and elastin. With all the summer rain this season, many patients have asked us how to manage itchy bug bites. Here are my tips as a Derm PA to help your skin heal from any itchy bug bite this summer.  Over-the-counter hydrocortisone ointment can help stop the itch in its tracks. It can be used twice daily for up to 14 days.  Over-the-counter anti-itch creams like Sarna or Dermeleeve. Place the product in the fridge for added soothing benefits. Use over-the-counter antihistamine medications like Zyrtec, Claritin, and Allegra to help stop histamine, the itching chemical that spreads throughout the ..read more

Many of our patients bring to us the concern of rough, bumpy skin on the back of their arms or the tops of their thighs. This is a condition called Keratosis Pilaris (KP), also affectionately known as chicken skin or strawberry skin. Studies show that this may have a genetic component, as it tends to run in families and is associated with other skin concerns, such as eczema.  People with KP have dead skin cells and debris that build up around the hair follicle. Effective topical treatments help unclog the hair follicles and prevent the build-up. Prescription Vitamin A  topicals can d ..read more

Tips for Managing Side Effects of Accutane

Accutane® (isotretinoin)  is a high dose of vitamin A used to treat acne cysts and nodules. It is a very effective medication, and since it is an oral medication, it is absorbed systemically. This medication’s number one side effect is dryness, which affects many areas of the body. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be helpful in randomized control trials in those taking isotretinoin to aid in overall dryness. This can be through dietary consumption of fish, seeds, nuts, and eggs. Otherwise, 1,000mg of omega-3 has been shown to be helpful in patients taking isotretinoin. We recommend ..read more

How to Prepare for a Skin Check

All skin surfaces are examined during skin checks from the top of the head to the toes. Skin is examined for evidence of pre-cancerous and cancerous spots for both nonmelanoma (skin cancers caused by the sun) and melanoma skin cancers (evolving moles). Biopsies and treatments can be completed on the same day. To prepare for your appointment, consider the following: Remove nail polish – we examine the nail beds for any unusual pigment.  Don’t wear any makeup – this allows us to examine all skin qualities; facial skin typically receives a lot of sun.  Scrub away any self-tanner – this ..read more

Minoxidil, or Rogaine, is one of the most accessible treatments on the over-the-counter market. Despite its accessibility, many misconceptions exist regarding the product and its use. Below are a few clarifications regarding one of our favorite hair care tools at Tareen Dermatology.   1.
