For this series, Dia invites artists to curate a playlist that brings together music they’re listening to now, in the studio, or that has been meaningful to them during their life. Photo: Don Stahl Trouble… started as a meditation on some of my interwoven listening and media production, mostly from 2018 to the future. Some of the collected tracks go back to my media installation Could You Visit Me in Dreams? (2018) in Vienna, through subsequent works like SM BNGRZ.03.01–03 (2021), also in Vienna; Some Munich Moments 1937–1972 (2022) in Munich; the more recent DFAI.01-05 (2023) at Dia Bridgeha ..read more

The utility of editing, editing as a utensil—Alan Martín Segal
Dia Art Foundation Blog

It was partly a decision and partly a consequence. Still, for a long time, I have used editing as a departure point in my practice. It is possible to think of editing as a procedure (a more open term than a technique) that can take the form of a question used to enter a text; providing a purpose, a mission, a light. Editing has a proteic quality that allows us to deal with the fragmentary of the world, either through suturing or excision. Sequencing is a constitutive part of audiovisual language and one of the editing operations, which involves organizing certain information, events, and stim ..read more

Photo: Don Stahl Activations is a series of interdisciplinary public workshops designed by artists in response to civic spaces in New York City. Each activation invites participants to encounter a readymade site through the lens of an artistic practice, reimagining them as spaces of creative possibility. All are welcome to participate. Inspired by particles, ingredients, and secret spaces, Stella Zhong's workshop converted the Chelsea Recreation Center’s spin room into the home base for a large-scale miniature sculpture operation. Participants were invited to choose from a buffet of small obj ..read more

Reflections on Workshop 5: Transformation Body with angel shanel edwards and Selomé Samuel: Lexicon requires embodied transformation to move beyond decorative landscapes. Words as tools and bodies as vehicles are helpful in grounding new ways of being beyond societal and early life conditioning and development. The goal of this workshop was to be in the experience of feeling the body as a means to strengthen and connect the feeling to vocalization pipelines as well as the embodiment of values. What does it look and feel like when our values run through our systems, and how does that syste ..read more

Reflections on Workshop 4: Cripping Care with Mae Eskenazi:  Crip care, love, and relationships in museums is groundbreaking—it is how we make our aliveness known to each other. Brilliance, creativity, and tenderness are words Mae Eskenazi used to describe their interactions with me and my work as it relates to my Dreaming Care into Being Experiential Learning Series hosted by Dia Art Foundation. The vulnerability, meaning-making, and world-building that happened in these workshops moved things in people’s lives that are still finding their way to be named. Mae’s offerings to Amer ..read more

Reflections on Workshop 3: Consenting Constellations with Meenadchi:  Family constellation work requires deep attunement to play, collective responsibility, and listening. Consent is an embedded practice in family constellation work as the facilitator must deeply question, listen, and respond to the seeker’s embodied consent throughout the constellation. We began last week’s constellation with a mini constellation around medicine I was seeking in regard to parenting my dog Charlie, as it relates to roles, domination, and behavioral outcomes. I noted that I have a challenging relati ..read more
