My Teaching Philosophy

by Katherine Brown Simply stated, I love what I do and it shows. It sustains the motivation for my students to take my classes and stay to the end. My enthusiasm for their progress helps them learn, improve, and come back for more. “Movement is the root of all psychological functioning,” a quotation by Ruella Frank, expresses my philosophy about yoga and its importance in mental and physical wellness. Yoga is a practice that teaches us to honor Self and Other, as well as the world around us. Beyond asana and the immediate physical “feel good” outcomes innate to yoga, my students learn and p ..read more

*Remembering David Graeber* and this is WHY the country is so sadly divided — we all know it; we see the writing on the wall with climate change and the COMPLETE LACK OF REAL action in this direction; and we all know the 1% ain’t gonna bail us out, so WE BLAME each other. Like any family will — “It’s YOUR fault! No, it’s YOUR fault!” Meanwhile, the planet burns, America’s democracy erodes (by the day!), and refugees flee their washed out homes, all over the world, and it ain’t gonna get any better! I think we all know this on gut level, but it’s too big, too tragic to take in, so we distract ..read more

Those who dwell … among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. Whatever the vexations or concerns of their personal lives, their thoughts can find paths that lead to inner contentment and to renewed excitement in living. Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of the birds, the ebb and flow of the tides, the folded bud ready for the spring. There is something infinitely #healing in the repeated refrains of nature—the assurance th ..read more

Bruce Springsteen’s Lost in Flood The ragamuffin gunner is returnin’ home  Like a hungry runaway He walks through town all alone “He must be from the fort”  He hears the high school girls say His countryside’s burnin’  With wolfman fairies dressed in drag for homicide The hit-and-run plead sanctuary ‘Neath a holy stone they hide They’re breakin’ beams and crosses  With a spastic’s reelin’ perfection Nuns run bald through Vatican halls Pregnant, pleadin’ immaculate conception And everybody’s wrecked on Main Street  From drinking unholy blood Sticker smiles sweet as Gunn ..read more

Yoga is autodidactic and experiential to the core, inside and out! That’s a lot of why I love it: it’s not utter bs like most “learning” in America, especially in schools. Empty, de-experientialized (think nclb) curriculum in schools begets a culture of empty, disembodied internet-addicted youth in our “care”. Don’t even get me started with what’s happened to human bonding and attachment since the dawn of the cell phone and social media took COMPLETE hold. Not too long ago, I left schools — teacher and once was school social worker — so that I could AGAIN value teaching and learning. I did thi ..read more

We’re told, “yoga will teach us who we are,” but I am hard pressed to see much self knowledge in Cal’s asana-crazed studio culture. Most of what I see is tad too repetitive, over-conditioned, standardized for my taste. An insecure foil of approval-seeking, fashion (lycra and tattoos for days), with lil knowledge of Self on grid. Yoga, enmeshed with, and subservient to, the “Palo Alto Effect.” From global capital to Yoga culture, California’s influence on markets and mayhem is not news! Native Californian himself, Malcom Harris, charges Californians as being the MOST conditioned people in histo ..read more
