by Sarah Trad Echoes (exhibition documentation), Vox Populi Gallery. Photo by Shaina Nasrin Throughout the process of curating Echoes, I kept thinking about when Kenza and I met at a café last year and first discussed bringing Algerian cinema to Philly. Developing this show meant a lot to us because we had been discussing how underrepresented Algerian art is, even in spaces with SWANA (South-West Asian North African) programming. Echoes is the first solo exhibition of work by Algerian-American artist, Kenza Bousseloub. On view at Vox Populi Gallery, the show features photography, an 8mm short ..read more

by Sharon Isabel Curley and Nicole Goicuria The Sun’s ingress into Aries marks the Spring Equinox, and the start of the Zodiacal New Year. We have completed the life cycle embodied by the 12 archetypes of the Zodiac, and as we transition out of Pisces season and into Aries season, it is time for rebirth. While there is always something brewing in the astrological weather, we are truly experiencing seismic shifts as two generational planets (Saturn and Pluto) are transitioning into new signs. Saturn is now in Pisces, and as spring begins, Pluto will ingress into Aquarius. It takes Pluto approxi ..read more

The Body is Cancelled

by Lane Speidel I am very angry with my doctors. I am very angry with my body. The body is cancelled. She told me that being transexual is a science experiment, but I didn’t need her to tell me that, I already knew. Did you know that doctors are actually trained not to care? One term for it is professional distance. They are actively trained to be detached from their patients. Some quotes: “That is not a side effect of this medication,” “This is an experimental use of this drug,” “There is no research being done on the long-term effect of hormone replacement therapy on trans people,” “What th ..read more

by Nicole Goicuria and Sharon Isabel Curley The Sun has entered the Cardinal Earth sign of Capricorn, marking the Winter Solstice. From this point in time onward, the days will increase in light as we await “the return of the sun” in the spring. Winter is the time of year where the Saturnian energy of Capricorn season compels us to look inward and assess how we are building our lives and personal legacies, motivating us to set goals for the year ahead, and Mercury retrograde just before the year ends will help us slow down and transition into 2023 with intention.  Jupiter will square the ..read more

Grids, Reflections, and Seeing Doubles: AJ Rombach at Fjord

by Joni Sullivan Like the rough edges of AJ Rombach’s work, the architecture of Fjord’s new location in Olde Kensington is exposed, unpolished, and honest. In their solo exhibition, DOUBLES, AT LEAST, one of AJ’s sculptural wall pieces hangs on a wooden support beam stripped of green paint, reminding me of an old birdhouse posted to a telephone pole. Grey and red pipes line the ceiling and walls. The space begs for work that responds to its quirks. AJ, who is based in Western Massachusetts, lamented not being able to see the space in person before their installation. But that didn’t stop them ..read more

Kati Gegenheimer, “Make Your Own Luck: Repeat,” 2022, oil on canvas, 18 x 24”. Image courtesy of Peep Projects. The temptation in writing about a show like Peep Projects’ Reveries is to fill it with everything. Some simply invite all. The effulgent symbology of Kati Gegenheimer, the frosted veils of Erin Murray, and the whirring currents of Molly Metz—these modestly-sized paintings and drawings transfigure and break beyond the bounds of their frames. Together, they hit like sudden, fleeting tinnitus: a sense overwhelmed to the point of breaking, an eye launched stratospherically and slowly ret ..read more

By Meredith Sellers David Aipperspach, 7-10pm, oil on canvas, 2021. Photo by Neighboring States. David Aipperspach is a Philadelphia-based artist whose work I’ve been following for some time. His paintings, materially lush and meticulously rendered, consistently push up against the boundaries of perception, lending a sense of unease to the everyday. I recently caught up with David to discuss the works in his first New York solo exhibition, Prologue to a garden dark, at CHART. The exhibition ran from March 18th to April 30th. Meredith Sellers: The paintings in your exhibition at CHART, Prologue ..read more
