The Transformation of Abercrombie & Fitch
The Robin Report
by Ken Hewes

The Abercrombie & Fitch brand and specialty chain is on fire. Sales grew 30 percent YoY in the last four reported quarters. The share price of Abercrombie’s parent ANF has rocketed from $35 to a high of $194 in the last year, aided in part by sibling brand Hollister’s 10 percent growth over the period. Check out TRR’s Retail Unwrapped podcast for more details!  Former CEO Jeffries always promoted the youthful attitude of ANF’s brands, and his creative vision was most vividly imagined in analog. Digital, for him, was more of an acquired taste, not an instinct. The younger Horowitz an ..read more

The Robin Report
by Warren Shoulberg

Now, are we about to see the next big assault in the specialty store space? Is Primark the next large-scale disrupter? H&M and Zara are known for being lean and running tight ships, but it appears that Primark takes both of those virtues a few steps further. Osum, the online research site, calls Primark’s business plan “strategic brilliance,” with a low-cost corporate culture “deeply ingrained into the ..read more

The Robin Report
by Mark Faithfull

Not content with trying to rule the world with one fast-fashion brand, ambitious Japanese apparel retailer, Fast Retailing is about to introduce a second label for the U.S. buying public this fall: GU. Is it time to feel sorry for Gen Z favorite Shein? The fast-fashion online retail phenomenon must be baffled why with what on paper represents one of the hottest initial public offerings (IPO) in history, at a whopping $66 billion, no exchange wants them. An IPO in Hong Kong would likely slash the valuation Shein can secure because there would be less demand, especially from U.S. funds which are growing wary of Hong Kong stocks over fears Washington may tighten investment restrictions. When was the last time you thought about Big Lots? This American retail giant has built a legacy of offering diverse, affordable products to cost-conscious consumers. And this may be one of its moments in time with so many consumers fed up with inflationary price hikes. Enter grocery. Coordinating merchandising and marketing efforts also has some upside potential when each retailer is assorting and promoting its product mix with full knowledge of what the other is doing.
