Our client’s love for terrariums helped inform this brief. Increased planting areas and a focus on hard landscaping details were also priorities for them. When looking out from the living space, we wanted the clients to feel an immediate sense of calm and feel at one with their very own green sanctuary. We combined highly textured, verdant foliage planting with pretty, successional planting and paired this with multi-stem trees, to create striking colour contrasts against the black charred Accoya of the boundary walls and the rust-coloured corten steel water tanks.   CLIENT RESPONSE From ..read more

WILTSHIRE RILL GARDEN

Once an active cattle-yard, a reflective rill now anchors this calm, transitional space which links gardens and outhouses to the main Cotswold cottage. Edged in smooth limestone, the mirrored black rill provides contrast to the buff Cotswold gravel, where vibrant, structural Buxus domes have been planted.  These domes are echoed in the deep planting beds opposite, where tall ornamental grasses are woven through pale perennial planting, adding a soft, ethereal quality to the overall look and feel of the space. Having previously been a productive farmyard, the subsurface ground was dense an ..read more

A once uninviting blank canvas renovated into an all year garden… Materials can transform a space from being unusable and high maintenance to a beneficial, worthwhile landscape. The selection in this project was key to delivering the brief. A transitional garden with all-season use, entertaining space, and increased privacy (a familiar and important desire in most urban outdoor environments.) The layout is unfussy with herbaceous borders flanking the sides of the EasiGrass artificial lawn. London Stone Jura Grey Limestone clads the steps to the house and creates the ideal spot for a ..read more

Country Garden, Abbots Leigh

Overlooking the Severn estuary, the historic house went through a major renovation by MOON design and build. The country garden no longer sat in harmony with the updated layout. A sensitive and site considerate garden design was developed to meet the requirements of the house’s new owners and its rural setting. The project was blessed with a surplus of natural pennant stone paving and this was implemented with a complimentary natural clay paver in a large kitchen terrace, cascading double aspect steps and a lower dining terrace. Blending the developed landscape with the wilder, far-reaching vi ..read more

A Japanese-inspired sanctuary garden in the heart of Bristol

Placed within the historic stone walls of a contemporary, subterranean home our Japanese-inspired sanctuary creates a refuge from busy city life…   Our client’s love for terrariums helped inform the brief, with increased planting and hard landscaping details vital to the scheme. Full-width rear glazing combined with terraced levels created a panoramic vista of the garden. When entering the living space and looking out, we wanted the clients to feel an immediate sense of calm and at one with their own sanctuary of green.   The existing garden comprised of two well-proportioned Granit ..read more

Following on from the success of the Japenese-inspired rear garden, we returned for the front…   In the early stages of the design process, setting the brief is the foundation of how the garden will evolve. Part of this discussion is weighing up key elements of practicality and usefulness balanced with the overall aesthetic. More commonly referred to as ‘Form over function’ (or vice versa). When designing front gardens, function tends to be the leading element due to the nature of the space and it’s primary use – moving from outside of the property to the front door. This can present chal ..read more

Chew Valley Views & Traditional Stonewalls

Located on top of Dundry Hill our client’s traditional farmhouse overlooks Chew Valley Lake and the Chew Valley.   We were instructed to design the garden adjoining the new extension, a light touch on the front garden, and the courtyard. The extension had been meticulously designed to blend in with the rest of the house which was constructed out of the now unavailable Dundry stone. Our task was to create a new terrace and raised lawn that complimented the property and was accessed through the bifold doors on the new aspect. The retaining walls were built from steel-reinforced hollow concr ..read more
