Sculpture Intermedia professor Moses Williams has spent the last year as an artist-in-residence at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. An exhibition, Parable Bodies, is the culmination of his year-long research and creative exploration. The exhibition runs April 11th through June 1st, with an opening reception on April 11, 2024, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The Department of Art & Art History was prominently featured at the Utah Art Education Association’s 2023-24 state-wide awards ceremony. Congratulations to the department chairperson, Prof. V. Kim Martinez, and art teaching student Carlos Miranda-Rodriguez.

Sadly, the Department of Art and Art History said goodbye to one of our own this past November, 2023. Emeritus Professor Sam Wilson left an indelible mark on this department, the larger Utah arts community, and the art world as a whole. Shawn Rossiter, the editor of 15Bytes, wrote a wonderful article about Prof. Wilson and his legacy. There is a video of Sam within the article, so those who may not have known him can see what an extraordinary human we were lucky to have worked with and called our friend or mentor.

Assistant Professor Jaclyn Wright has an image from her series High Visibility (Blaze Orange) included in Matte Magazine’s Exciting Photography Now!, a 480-page survey of current American photography edited by Eve Lyons and Matthew Leifheit. The publication was released at the International Center for Photography in December 2023.

Nestled in the south side of the Bouge Foundry is the contemporary art space Modern West, a gallery devoted to promoting Western artists and The West. Their most recent group exhibition, Lake Effect, features work by painting and drawing Professor Al Denyer. It shares artwork that discusses environmental issues and land use related to the Great Salt Lake. The exhibition is on display from January 19 through March 2, 2024.
