We’ve just finished a season of fasting as a church body, and you may be thinking about continuing to fast through Lent this year. While our three weeks of corporate prayer and fasting during Depend have been meaningful as we seek God’s will for the growth of our church and ministry, Lent can be a deeply personal season, inviting us to “set our face toward Jerusalem” (Luke 9:53) as we look towards the cross and Resurrection Sunday.
If you’re contemplating what Lent could look like this year, here are four ways to integrate the practice in your home:

Editor’s Note: This post was written on the ground last year, during a vision trip to a West Asian city. During the trip, team members prayer-walked the city and asked the Lord to rescue and redeem those who are perishing.
“God is great!
I bear witness that there is no God except the One God.
I bear witness that Muhammed is the messenger of God.
Hurry to prayer.
Hurry to salvation.
God is great!
There is no god except the One God.”
I was awakened by the sound of these words being repeated outside my bedroom window this morning. In the pre-dawn hours, a muezzin—the mosque official responsibl ..read more

I never imagined I’d be here! I hear these words from friends facing divorce—far too often—and it breaks my heart. I bet you come across these same situations, don’t you? As believers, we are called to love God and to love our neighbor. Dealing with troubled marriages and faithfully dealing with divorce and remarriage all comes with the territory.
How are we then to respond? There’s a tension. We want to be loving but we also want to be faithful to God’s Word and his design for marriage. It’s not an easy road to take but an important one.
Here at Providence, we love our marriages and w ..read more

This spring, our Women’s Bible Study will be in the book of Judges. This book is familiar to us in parts and pieces; many of us know the stories of Deborah, Gideon, and Samson. But few of us know how those stories fit together in the book of Judges. We rarely stop to read those stories in their context—to see how Deborah’s story leads to Gideon’s or the cycle that unites all three judges. I certainly didn’t have that context before preparing for this study.
I’ve read Judges when a daily Bible reading plan has taken me there, but I confess I’m usually eager to turn the page from the final cha ..read more

It’s happened in almost every small group I’ve been part of for the last twenty years. We have a sweet time of prayer at the end of the group. Men and women split up into gender-specific groups; we share what God is doing in our lives and learn more about each other as we share our hearts. One of the most common prayer requests during these times goes something like this: “Please pray that I am more consistent in my daily Bible reading and prayer throughout the week.” Typically when you dig a little deeper, this person is saying, “I rarely read my Bible and I don’t have any plan to do it. But ..read more

So, how’s your prayer life? Real talk. How rich is your time with God in prayer?
Let me give you a few snapshots of what my prayer life can often look like on any given day. Does any of this sound familiar?
When I’m having my quiet time early in the morning, I often can’t string together a coherent thought. I search my mind for something of substance to share with God and somehow end up reminding myself of what emails I need to send and what projects I need to work on that day. In no time, I’m convincing myself I’ll pray later.
When my family sits down to dinner, I say a prayer because we ju ..read more

What makes “O Holy Night” such an iconic and beloved Christmas carol? A wide range of people have recorded it, including Mariah Carey, Josh Groban, David Phelps, Ella Fitzgerald, Weezer, and my personal favorite, The Reign of Kindo.
No matter which version of the song you like best, the consensus opinion is that this song is challenging to sing. “O Holy Night” spans an octave plus a fifth in range and each section contains long, sustained notes. This is why it is typically sung as a solo and not as a choral arrangement. When you hear an excellent rendition of this song it seems ethereal ..read more
