A prominent criminal defence lawyer is calling on the federal government to take another look at its laws on breathalyzers to add safeguards for minorities.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) announced earlier this month that officers are now requesting breath samples from all drivers pulled over in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), even if they show no signs of impairment. The RCMP has also implemented this approach in Saskatchewan.
“As impaired driving occurrences continue to increase in Ontario Provincial Police jurisdictions, the OPP is taking its strongest measures yet to detect, inv ..read more

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dr. Cyril Wecht, a pathologist and attorney whose biting cynicism and controversial positions on high-profile deaths such as President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 assassination caught the attention of prosecutors and TV viewers alike, died Monday. He was 93.
Wecht’s death was announced by the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts, which did not disclose a cause or place of death, saying only that he “passed away peacefully.”
Wecht’s almost meteoric rise to fame began in 1964, three years after he reentered civilian life after serving a brief stint at Maxwell Air Force Base ..read more

Blanket rezoning is returning to Calgary council chambers Monday, ahead of an anticipated vote on the long-debated proposal which prompted the city’s longest-ever public hearing.
The process began on April 22, when members of the public began flocking to city hall to share their thoughts on the proposed plan, which the city hopes would provide relief to the housing crisis by speeding up approvals and making it easier for more housing options to be built across the city.
Last week, administration provided a recap to council following 12 days of public hearings that saw over 736 speakers present ..read more

Next time Android users in Canada make a 911 call, a new service embedded in their phones will transmit their location to emergency responders.
Google announced the debut of Android’s Emergency Location Service in Canada on Monday, saying its goal is to reduce response times by helping emergency personnel locate people in need quicker.
“This is such a critical service to users because so often a call taker wouldn’t have gotten the location they needed to quickly and easily dispatch that help, so this is … a huge help to Canadian folks who are calling emergency services,” said Boone Spooner, a ..read more

There’s one less horse in the race.
Alberta Federation of Labour president Gil McGowan has dropped out of the race to become the next leader of Alberta’s NDP.
“I’m writing today to let you know that I’ve made the hard decision to suspend my leadership campaign,” he wrote in an email Monday morning. “Paying the final instalment of the $60,000 entry fee — which was due last night at midnight — has proven too much for me.”
This leaves just four people left in the contest — MLAs Kathleen Ganley, Sarah Hoffman and Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse, and former Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

A new study projecting declining rates of cancer cases and deaths in Canada demonstrates the success of prevention and early detection programs, but also highlights areas where more work is needed to save and prolong lives, researchers say.
“The good news is that more people are surviving with and beyond their cancers,” said lead author Darren Brenner, an associate professor in the oncology and community health sciences departments at the University of Calgary.
The study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday, estimates the number and rates of new ca ..read more
