This late October weekend marks Reformation Day as it was 505 years ago when Martin Luther famously nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg Cathedral, now known as "All Saint's Church" in Wittenberg, Germany. Of course, the reformation may seem a distant memory with little bearing on today—but that is untrue! The Reformation movement continues! Then, as now, the Reformation looks to the following pillars: Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, to the glory of God alone. These items form a foundation for our faith and lives. Scripture, for the Christian, is the highest ..read more

Risen Indeed!

(April 23, 2022) Christ is Risen! And that’s no idle tale. Christ is risen indeed. This familiar refrain at the beginning of the Easter Season will greet us each week in Sunday worship until the day of Pentecost. Over this fifty day period we celebrate the stories of appearances of the risen Christ and we remember the words he spoke to his disciples—they set the stage for Jesus to ascend and leave the disciples in charge—a charge and commission we now carry. We carry the weight of the Easter proclamation "Christ is Risen! even though this world continues to be filled with dangers, toils, and s ..read more

Love Wins

The warm sunshine of June shines around us now. As I walked Penny this morning in the fresh new light of the day, I noticed a small garden flag in our neighbor’s yard. It said “love wins.” I think that may be the brightest promise of our faith, attested on every page of scripture. Love wins. Earlier this week, I skimmed again through The Screwtape Letters. In C.S. Lewis’s imaginative vision of the battle between good and evil, love wins. Both literally and figuratively. Rob Bell’s 2011 book titled, Love Wins, explores the depth and length of God’s love—in Jesus Christ, God’s love for us goes a ..read more

It's a beautiful day and the sun shines gloriously as I write, but I’m stuck at the Honda dealership for a safety recall. Stuck or not, I’m glad I'm here. When was the last time you were glad to have to do something? I don’t think I’ve ever been 'glad' to take the car to the dealer, but I usually sit outside in the sunshine, catch up on phone calls or some reading I’ve been meaning to complete. The time is never wasted; it reminds me in the busy-ness of life to slow down. Of course, the book I brought along to read this day has helped. It argues that in this secular age we’ve been tuned to not ..read more

Contented?

As I write the skies have opened to pour showers of blessings upon the parched ground. Showers of blessing! If that sounds like an old hymn, it is. The image is taken from Ezekiel 34:26, as God reiterates, HE is shepherd—going after flocks when they get scattered, rescuing, bringing them back from foreign lands. Here God also promises to be the judge between the sheep, between the rams and the goats, too. He asks a question to the flocks which begins: “Aren’t you satisfied. . .” That is THE question, isn’t it? What is contentment? What is satisfaction? How do you know you have had enough, a su ..read more

A Very Brief History of Wycliffe

Organized in 1963, Wycliffe Presbyterian Church first gathered in John B. Dey Elementary School under the leadership of Pastor Rev. J. Stanton Blain. Guided by the Presbyterian Association of Eastern Virginia, it was named for the English Bible translator and scholar John Wycliffe (1330-1384),. The 79-member congregation moved in 1966 to 8.3 acres at 1445 on the then two-lane N. Great Neck Road, and built an A-frame building across the pond from the present building. In 1973 an education building was constructed.. The congregation continued to grow in membership and mission under the leadershi ..read more
