I don’t know about you, but I hate being wrong. Furthermore, I hate the embarrassment accompanying admitting I’m wrong. But what I know I hate most is trying to cover up instead of admitting my mistake. Before we get into today’s devotional post we need to revisit something I said last week. Here’s what I ..read more

373 – Psalm 34 – Introduction

The title of this Psalm gives us the occasion for David’s authorship. You can read more about it in 1 Samuel 21. There are twenty-two letters in the Hebrew alphabet and twenty-two verses in Psalm thirty-four. When I see a Psalm with twenty-two verses I wonder if the author wrote it as an acrostic. An ..read more

I used to think it was not possible to understand the Bible. Then I met a group that said, “You don’t understand the Bible because you first have to get in the Spirit and let Him tell you what it means”. Ok, that sounded spiritual, so it must be right, I thought. How does one ..read more

There are two types of people—those who believe in Christ Jesus, and those who don’t. Many would argue people who don’t know for sure whether or not Christ Jesus is real is a third category. But think about it, that’s just another group of people who do not believe in Christ Jesus. You either believe ..read more

Psalm 33:8 (LSB)      8       Let all the earth fear Yahweh;           Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.    Sometimes we bristle at what we read in the Holy Bible. We may not be aware we are doing it, but sometimes we re-interpret what the Word of God ..read more

The Psalmist uses the name Yahweh thirteen times in the twenty-two verses of Psalm thirty-three. One fascinating thing about this Psalm is it is not a prayer. As a matter of fact, the Psalmist doesn’t address Yahweh directly until the last verse. Psalm 33:22 (LSB)      22       Let Your lovingkindness, O Yahweh, be ..read more

I have become sensitive to God’s proper name Yahweh (YHWH). I notice it almost every time I pick up my Bible. As you might expect, it often appears in the Psalms, whether penned by David or someone else. Psalm 32 is no exception. The name YHWH shows up four times here – two times in ..read more

Psalm 32:1-2 (NKJV)            1       Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,     Whose sin is covered.            2       Blessed is the man to whom [YHWH] does not impute iniquity,     And in whose spirit there is no deceit. In this eleven-verse Psalm written by David, some powerful truths are communicated. He starts by describing some of the attributes of a “Blessed” person (verses 1-2). He then introduce ..read more

As I was reading through Psalm thirty-one, I noticed a particular pattern. I didn’t study the pattern exhaustively but what I did observe served as a good introductory look into this powerful Psalm. We’ll take a peek after some initial observations. This particular Psalm, written by David, was added to the official collection during his lifetime. As the title reveals, the King wrote this twenty-four-verse song with the expectation the official choir would sing it. Obviously, ancient Hebrew music, and particularly the Psalms, were written with a very different structure from our songs of today ..read more

364 – Psalm 30 – Forever?

Last time we only got through verse three of Psalm thirty. It might seem strange, but I want to continue our study by first looking at the last verse of this worshipful Psalm. Psalm 30:12 (LSB) 12 That my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Yahweh my God, I will give thanks to You forever. The first observation we should probably make is that verse twelve starts in the middle of a sentence. Don’t let the capitalized first word “That” deceive you into assuming the beginning of a sentence. It’s only capitalized because it starts the verse. Personally, I think that’s a poor decisio ..read more
