In these trying times, I invite you to follow the example of our Moderator Lea, try (simply try) to focus on what you love. Look for the desire underneath your disgust. Look for the compassion inside your anger. Practice breathing. And hopefully you’ll have more energy to continue being the Church God needs for this time and this place ..read more

Charlie Ross passed away on June 7, 2024.January 7, 1937 - June 7, 2024 Our faith in Jesus Christ reminds us of the great comfort we have in knowing that there is something beyond the mortal life we live here on earth. Regardless of the great hope that brings us, it is still difficult for those of us who are left behind. In that spirit, we ask that we all surround Charlie’s daughters, Tammy and Valerie, and their families as they move into this next season of their lives. A celebration of Charlie’s life has been scheduled for September 14 at Vancouver United Church of Christ. Vanco ..read more

We live in an age of what I call aggressive theologies. People who know they’re correct are not willing to simply evangelize. They pass laws to force people to do as they wish, or bend whole denominations to their will. In the face of such certainty and belligerence, it can be hard to know what we believe. In the United Church of Christ, we try to hold a big tent and allow people to work out their own theologies, but we don’t always give our people the tools we need to do that. As a result, many of us fall prey to people who are loud and certain. We wonder, “That person is so sure ..read more

We have some news that will be difficult to read. After many lengthy conversations with Ministry Team Leaders about what is possible for this summer, Natalie and I have determined we need to make major modifications to the Camp Adams summer camp program to ensure a quality and safe experience for both campers and volunteers. We’re still working out some of the details, but wanted to let you know as soon as possible, since it will affect your summer plans. The big change is that Exodus, Sojourners, Discoverers, and Genesis/Seekers sessions will not run as originally scheduled, but we’re modify ..read more
