November Wines-Bordeaux tastings in London

January Wines
The year in wine begins in Burgundy, or rather with burgundy tastings. If that sounds wonderful, remind yourself there is an awful lot of underperforming burgundy, and much of it comes at a high price. This saddens me, and many others, as some of the most gorgeous wines I have ever drunk have been burgundies, and finding the next great burgundy is like pursuing the Holy Grail – and as often as not, just as unrewarding.
I had some nice Chablis at the big London tasting. Most growers seem to have abandoned the idea of making wines in imitation of Chardonnays from further sou ..read more

The label for Château Mouton Rothschild 2021 illustrated by Chiharu Shiota
The Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota has created the original artwork Universe of Mouton for the label of Château Mouton Rothschild 2021.
In her drawing, the fragile silhouette of a human figure faces gorgeous, generous nature. It is not the centre of attention but seems small compared to the environment. It is as though the figure is holding onto the balance between nature and humans. Its grip cannot be too tight or the thread will break, nor too loose or else the cloud will blow away and the connection will be br ..read more

September Food and Wine in Provence
Diary of Giles MacDonough
It has been a crazy summer. After a scorching June in Britain, we had a cold July and August which picked up a bit at the end. The heat reappeared in September, climbing up again to a dizzy 35C in London. It is rare to see proper summer weather in September here but there was lots of record-breaking warmth this year, and it is not over yet. I am writing on 3 October and the BBC is telling me to expect sun well into next week, with the thermometer meant to touch 26C on Sunday.
Every now and then I go outside to look at that ap ..read more
