Four Things a Pastor Should Avoid Saying Publicly
Louisiana Baptists
by Ray Swift
7M ago
We all develop and grow over time. So I am not advocating that I always say the right words at the right time when I am speaking. Mercy, I have and will continue to make plenty of blunders as long as the Lord gives me opportunity to keep speaking. However, there are some phrases that a pastor should avoid saying when called upon to speak. I hope you will accept with a small touch of humor this advice below. Avoiding these phrases will keep you from speaking randomly, keep you from embarrassing yourself, and most of all keep you from tainting the very precious and powerful Word of God.  ..read more

45 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes experienced a decline in population in the last 10 years. However, places are still increasing in population. All of these places need churches to be planted and/or replanted. The years 2019 and 2020 will be forever infamous in all our minds. We all are aware of the impacts those years had on medical and government personnel, businesses, schools, and churches. Those impacts continue into the present as well. So much so that studies have already been conducted to measure the impacts. One such study reveals both the positive and the negative. Three years after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, churches have fewer people in the pews, more money in the collection plate and less conflict than they had in 2020. Despite their struggles, many congregations are optimisti ..read more

Show Some Love to Your Pastor
Louisiana Baptists

Each year, the month of October is designated in the Christian community as Pastor and Minister Appreciation month. What a special time this has been for me personally as churches took time to encourage and bless me with notes/cards, spoken words, gifts and prayers. I ask every Louisiana Southern Baptist church to join me in celebrating your Pastor(s) and Ministerial Staff members sometime during the month of October. Remember it’s not how much you do its simply that you do something to show appreciation for their ministry of leadership. We all have been struggling for the last couple of ye ..read more

I’ve been reading…. I recently finished reading a fairly recent book by Pastor J. Josh Smith, The Titus Ten: Foundations for Godly Manhood, by B&H Publishing, 2022. It’s been a while since I read a book specifically written to help men learn, pursue, and cultivate a lifestyle honoring to Christ. Smith’s book is based on ten qualities from the apostle Paul’s short letter to his mentee, Titus. These qualities include chapters on: Dominion, Gospel, Identity, Assignments, Authority, Character, Doctrine, Mission, Zeal and Investments. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discuss ..read more

Radical Evangelism

Note: This is the sixth in a series entitled “Culture of Evangelism.” Part 1 • Part 2 • Part 3 • Part 4 • Part 5 The early church experienced explosive growth because of a conviction to evangelize which led to a culture of evangelism. When confronted and threatened, they did not pray for their safety but for greater boldness. In this culture of evangelism, every decision is celebrated, but the evangelist never settles. This is the testimony of Philip in Acts 8 after the conversion of the Ethiopian Eunuch. As the baptism waters were still stirring and the eunuch was still shouting, the Spi ..read more
