Befriending your body when it lets you down

BY SELAH RITCHIE When I first got sick with multiple abdominal vascular compressions syndrome (AVCs), I really struggled with the idea that my body had given up and that I was failing myself because I couldn’t just be healthy. Being sick felt like a personal failing, like if I’d just eaten more and better foods, had more water, done more exercise, then all of this could have been avoided. It took me a while to figure out that this wasn’t at all true. Being sick wasn’t and isn’t my fault.  After having surgery to treat AVCs, I can now eat without pain, walk and move around without any risk ..read more

BY DANICA BRYANT My Cosmic Girl – Help It My Cosmic Girl’s groovy country folk sound shines on their latest single Help It. This track offers up a chorus destined to stick in your head with its bright acoustic guitars and warm, cosy feel, telling a story of the battle for self-care and looking out for yourself. Dua Lipa – Radical Optimism At long last, the third studio album from pop princess Dua Lipa, Radical Optimism, has dropped with an explosive bang. A psychedelic dance-pop record all about staying relentlessly positive in an increasingly dark and depressing world, Dua Lipa offers up bop ..read more

We caught up with Aotearoa duo Aro, to chat about their latest album, writing bilingual waiata and their musical journey. For those reading who aren’t familiar with Aro, tell us a bit about yourselves and this project? Kia ora! Aro is myself (Emily) and my husband Charles Looker ( and kinda also our two tamariki). We started writing music together about seven years ago, around the same time that we got married. This new project is inspired by stories linked to Charles’ whakapapa – stories of our native rākau (trees) and ngārara (insects/reptiles).  The album “He Rākau, He Ngārara” takes i ..read more

We are excited to be premiering the latest music video from Manila-born, Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist Ms. Mia. Check it out below and read on for our chat with her about what’s coming up, her inspirations and the video, to celebrate! Tell us about when you wrote your song Going for the Kill? I wrote this song right after I completely shut down an argument. I was already annoyed at someone and then they said something that took me over the edge, so I didn’t hold back unleashing my fiery “Don’t mess with me” side.  Sometimes it’s really called for, and justified! Today we’re premiering the ..read more

We caught up with local artist Alex Beattie to chat about his new single, collaborations, his musical journey and what is in the works for the up-and-coming singer-songwriter. Tell us a bit about your new single Falling Over Backwards – what was the inspiration behind it? The initial ideas for the song started out when I was jamming with my friends and I had the idea for the song’s main riff in my head, but was struggling to find a way that’s actually playable on guitar. When I finally managed to learn the riff, I immediately started recording and the whole song just kind of emerged pretty fa ..read more

Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me —A Patient’s Version

BY SELAH RITCHIE Track 10 on The Tortured Poets Department, Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me reminds me of the battle people with AVC’s (Abdominal Vascular Compressions Syndrome) (or any person with a rare illness) face with the medical system on so many levels.  I completely understand that’s not what the song was written about, but when relating it to my own life and the experiences of many people (women in particular) around the world, it fits so perfectly. I just want to say that not all the examples or ideas presented here are of my own experience but instead a culmination of experience ..read more

TTPD: The Anthology – A Swiftie’s Review

BY SELAH RITCHIE The second that The Tortured Poets Department was released, a new countdown started for 2 hours. Nobody knew what the countdown was for but some of us had hunches. The delusional Swifties like myself wanted so desperately to believe that Taylor Swift would release a second album. All the signs were there, all the hints at the number 2 from clocks, peace signs, double typewriters and more. But surely this was just another red herring or a reference to something else? There’s no way an artist would release two albums on the same day right? I sat at the dinner table, refreshing a ..read more
