San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in America; it has more people than Boston, Dallas, San Diego, Detroit, Seattle, or Atlanta. Among its many charms are the Pearl District, the River Walk, fabulous Mexican food, an ample supply of affordable housing, and of course the Alamo. San Antonio's RiverWalk What is lacks is great pizza. Among America's ten largest cities, San Antonio ranks 10th in regard to the number of pizza destinations worth your time and travel. It does have a few gems: Stella Public House and Dough Pizzeria Napoletana are making top-shelf Neapolitan pizzas; there i ..read more

Review: Pedroso's Pizza *SICILIAN SLICE* - Austin, TX

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2024 Not long ago, we visited Pedroso's Pizza in their trailer on Burnet Rd, not far from Route 183. We were smitten with both the NY slice and the Grandma style slice, and our full review follows this update.  On a recent revisit, we found a Wednesday slice special featuring  Sicilian style pizza. In fact, the menu for whole pizzas includes thin crust New York pizza, slightly thicker American style pizza, square Grandma pizza, square Sicilian style pizza, and a Trenton tomato pie! (There are now two Pedroso's locations, including a "Pedroso's Square Pie Trailer" in ..read more

New Jersey Dominates 2021 Top Ten List

Here at Pizza Quixote, we do a wrap each January to highlight the best new discoveries of the previous calendar year. Keep in mind, these are not the "Ten Best Pizzas Ever!" but simply our ten best *discoveries* of the year past. Marinara slice at Papa's in Robbinsville Naturally, Texas pizzas (surprisingly excellent) have been prominent in the year-end reviews ever since a 2019 relocation from the Philly suburbs to the Austin suburbs. Never more so than in 2020, when the pandemic really constricted travel opportunities. But 2021 did include a few trips to NY-NJ-PA, and New Jersey rea ..read more

Review: Hoboken Pie - Austin, TX
Pizza Quixote

What is the best pizza near the University of Texas in Austin? There's plenty of choices, but most lean toward the "filling bellies of drunk college kids with cheap greasy pizza" approach. After a bit of research, I placed my bet on Hoboken Pie, intrigued by their claim "Jersey inspired" and their use of "unbleached, un-bromated flour, nitrate and MSG-free meats from local purveyors, farm-fresh veggies, locally grown tomatoes and whole-milk cheeses."  How many UT Austin students know that Hoboken is the small NJ town across the Hudson River from New York, and also the birthplace of Frank ..read more

2023 Breakout Pizzas

Do you remember your Top Five Meals of 2023? I can't swear that I could name mine, but I can put together the Top Five Breakout Pizzas of 2023. To be clear, these are not the "Five Best Pizzas in the World" (although they all belong on the ballot), but simply the five best pizzas that I tried for the first time in 2023. Let's count them down! 5. Dovetail Pizza & Bar, Austin TX. Dovetail occupies a friendly, hip, casual spot in the Bouldin Creek section of Austin. They are crafting lovely ovals in a Neapolitan/New York hybrid style.  We said in our review:  The pizza at Dovetail ..read more

Review: Archetype Pizza - York, PA

Archetype Pizza is the sister restaurant to Roost Uncommon Kitchen, and they share a connected space at 33 West Market Street in York, PA. Roost opened for business in 2017, and co-owner Philip Given began offering a pizza menu at Archetype in the fall of 2022.  Even though I moved from southeastern Pennsylvania to Texas in 2019, Archetype has been on my radar as I've followed their progress on Facebook, drooling over pictures of the pizza. A recent vacation in Gettysburg put me close enough to finally visit, and I rounded up our party of five for dinner at Archetype on a Saturday night ..read more

Review: 290 Locale Winery & Pizzeria - Johnson City, TX

Finding great pizza has evolved a lot over the past decade. Not that long ago, it was difficult to find any pizza beyond the white-bready soft crust offerings from chains like Domino's or Pizza Hut. While mass-produced pizza has its charms, other more "authentic" pizzas have come forward. You can get a solid Detroit style pizza in every major city, legit Neapolitan pies are baking all over America in 900-degree ovens, and the classic Trenton and New Haven tomato pies are known beyond their neighborhoods. New York style at 290 Locale But what if you are craving that soft crusted pizza ..read more

Review: Oakwood Pizza Box, Raleigh NC

I first visited Raleigh in 1980. At the time, it seemed like a distant ugly cousin to the two gems anchoring the other corners of the burgeoning Research Triangle: Durham and Chapel Hill. Likewise, North Carolina State University was a plain and functional school lacking the lovely campus views and amenities of Duke and the University of North Carolina. I was delighted to see that so much has changed since then. Raleigh today is a lovely city with abundant green spaces and a charming downtown full of great shops and restaurants. The N.C. State campus is vibrant. During six sunny days in Novem ..read more

Updated Review: Brack's Backyard - Spicewood, TX

UPDATE September 2023 We first visited Brack's in February of 2023, and that review follows below. I've been back several times since then, and the pizza seems to get better each time. The wonderful Via 313 (cited below) has opened a branch in nearby Bee Cave, but Brack's Detroit pizza is even better. In February, I wasn't ready to dub Brack's as the Best Pizza in Texas, but now it seems obvious. Detroit style. From https://bracksbackyard.com/ The pizzas are made in a very large trailer, but the A/C could not keep up with the 2023 summer heat in Texas, so the pizza making was shu ..read more

Review: Dovetail Pizza & Bar - Austin TX
Pizza Quixote

In a town with lots of acclaim for its food and culture, some of the hottest buzz in Austin is focused on Dovetail Pizza and Bar, where six co-owners have brought together an eclectic menu featuring pizza (of course), pasta, and a take on Navajo fry bread. Austin Monthly describes the pies as "tavern pizza" but the review that drew me in was a report that the pizza is my favorite hybrid: a cross between a Neapolitan pizza (soft, puffy, bakes in 90 seconds at 900 degrees) and a New York style pie (thin and crisp crust). Three of us went for an early dinner on a blazing hot day in June. One me ..read more
