“Those who don’t mind their business, either have no mind or have no business.” - Sister Mary Edana Sister Mary Edana was my great aunt. She served as a Catholic nun for over 75 years. I remember attending her Golden Jubilee when I was a teenager. She was a lovely woman whose life was all about serving others. But she could see right through people, especially judgemental ones. She passed away decades ago. But her quote still stands. NECTARBALL is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. As Women’s Month of March 2024 unfurls itself, we are focusing on the Women of Cannabis. Today, it’s all about Keiko Beatie. Patty and Mark sat down with Keiko during the High Times Cannabis Cup in San Bernardino sometime before Covid struck, as we were filming the documentary, “Nectarball: The Story of Cannabis” in which she appears. This is her Prohibition story. NECTARBALL is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The Soothing Art of Self-Massage
NECTARBALL

In our primitive days, before cell phones, before computers, before the Industrial Age, we knew all about self massage.  Combs did not exist. So we untangled our hair with our fingers.  There was no soap. So we used "elbow grease" to clean our bodies.  We didn’t have shoes. Our feet were naturally massaged by the earth.  NECTARBALL is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Somewhere through the ages we lost "touch" with our own bodies, forgetting the naturally pleasing art of self massage.&nbs ..read more

Yutes vs. Boomers My Cousin Vinny movie poster (1992) Today’s “yutes” as Joe Pesci’s character Vinny refers to “youths” in the hilarious film “My Cousin Vinny,” are not happy with boomers. How can I tell? I see Gen X and Millennials bad-mouthing us on Instagram, TikTok, Youtube and other social media spaces where they let their feelings loose. The “kids” are blaming us seniors for the ravages of Climate Change, the high cost of education, and the mass murders occurring daily in every venue you can think of because assault weapons are so easily accessible to people who should not have them ..read more

Hello, dear readers of Nectarball Substack, Prohibition Exhibit at Museum of Weed, Los Angeles, 2019 Today, I want to talk about a sobering chapter of history that sheds light on the dark origins of cannabis prohibition. As we explore the factors that led to the unjust demonization of this plant, we must confront the uncomfortable truth: the political aspirations and greed of a few old white racists played a significant role in shaping the course of cannabis prohibition. And don’t kid yourself, they are still trying to restrict people from using cannabis. A Campaign Driven by Prejudice In th ..read more

? Choosing Our Path: Mark and Patty after their three-day hike on the Routeburn Track, New Zealand South Island, 1982, with their first photo bomber Our journey together began on Valentine's Day 1982, the day we met. After becoming boyfriend and girlfriend within weeks, we made a decision that would define our lives. We chose not to have children. I didn’t want them. Mark could have gone either way, but he supported my decision. ? Navigating Public Curiosity: For about 20 years, when we were younger, we faced waves of intrusive questions like, "When are you two going to start a family?" and ..read more
