Heya friends! I know that it’s been a while. Here’s what’s been going on:  Quite a few years ago, when we started our hair care company, I received a comment from a How Bourgeois reader. She seemed upset and said: “You recommended products on your blog for those of us going gray. I bought them and now you are making and recommending your own line?!” To say I felt badly was an understatement, but then I took a deep breath and thought for a moment before I replied. Here’s the truth -  The truth is, I loved and used and still stand by every single product that I have ever mentioned ..read more

Still Here, Still Gray!

Helloooooooo blogosphere readers, occasional lurkers and silver-haired friends! I've missed you . I'm here still here, I'm still gray, and I just wanted to say: "Hi!" I suppose that it's time for one of my occasional check-ins where I ramble a bit and plop some pictures and words down for posterity's sake and for those patient and good-hearted folks who come around to actually read about what has been new. Thank you, I really can not thank you enough for being here. Y'all are so nice with your comments (on other social media) and your emails and your patronage of The B ..read more

So here's what happened: the street sweeper came...
How Bourgeois

So here's what happened: the street sweeper came by at 4:30am and woke me up. Which is weird I thought because the street sweeper usually only comes by in spring and fall, not summer. The street sweeper historically comes by at 5:00 or 5:30am and wakes me up then. It's a massive truck and as it passes by, sounds like a small jet getting ready for take-off. At least in the dead of morning it does. And so I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep, because I was thinking about how much this past year and a half has opened my eyes and how much of what I see upsets and angers me. I tried to let go ..read more

426 Days At Home
How Bourgeois

*PROLOGUE - As I write this prologue, it is now early June of 2021. Life has gotten so much better since beginning this post last fall.            (Don't worry, this entry isn't all doom and gloom at all, it just starts off that way. )                After all was said and done, we ended up stay in our home, pretty literally, for almost 14 months to the day. 426 days. As I go on to mention below, for 14 months we avoided stores, restaurants, get togethers with friends and family. It was really really difficult. Detroit ..read more

Knock Knock Knock!

Knock knock knock! Is anybody out there? I don't expect anyone to have to wait around for me. The How Bourgeois blog has been pretty quiet for a long time! I've just been in How Bourgeois Land, over-thinking things I'm sure and trying to live life offline. What happened was, that I sort of became.......put off by social media and online culture, and what was starting to be seen as completely normal, i.e. humble brags, a constant parade of "I bought this or that, or use this or that, or went here or there," and of course selfies - of which I have been known to take a few. I know that I'm ..read more

Dreaming Of the Simple Life
How Bourgeois

THIS is the life I want to live. The quiet, simple, slow life that is clipping homegrown herbs and flowers and hanging them to dry. I feel like I don’t need shopping or fancy or anything fast paced. Just solitude, home and the warm earth. It’s funny because 8 years ago , when we moved here, we thought life in a busy downtown was what we would want. It was a great adventure and experiment! We were coming from a painfully quiet, suburban neighborhood after living in San Francisco before that, and craved more excitement. Now though, at 42 and knowing myself a little bit more, gosh all I ..read more

She Chose Us
How Bourgeois

Dear friends, I have a bit of an amazing story to tell you, but unfortunately, it starts with very sad news from last March. Out beautiful, sweet fluffy ball of love, Willow, suddenly passed away and we are just heartbroken over it.  It was an enormous shock and unforeseen. Poor Willow stopped eating her beloved food and cookies and we knew something was very wrong. We went to our vet thinking it could be her teeth, given Willow's fairly young age- about 7 years old, but by the next day, we were sent to an emergency veterinary center and learned that she had advanced lymphoma.  ..read more

How WE Homeschool High School & Our Path to University!

Hi friends! How is everyone? I hope that you're doing well! As another school year comes to a close, I'm reflecting back on this completely unexpected journey into homeschooling that we've been on. By far, the most difficult thing that I have ever undertaken, and in the same breath, one of the most rewarding and life-changing. Just like with many aspects of our lives, there is no, one "right way" in education. I personally don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to learning, but I do believe in the gift of finding a student's "right fit." A local public school could be fantastic and ..read more
