Photo by Scott Taetsch/Getty Images With another step forward this year, the Orioles shortstop is playing his way into MVP talk Wednesday afternoon’s rubber match against the Los Angeles Angels made one thing clear, in case it needed to be made clear: Gunnar Henderson is one of the best players in the game. Not only did the 22-year-old lefty reach base five times and hit a home run; he also made a spectacular defensive play at the toughest position on the diamond. It’s this insane combination of power, speed and defense that makes Gunnar such a freak, and that makes his appearance on an early ..read more

Photo by Joe Robbins/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The O’s reliever was back on the mound in Norfolk, and it did not go great. Elsewhere, Aberdeen was the lone winner on a tough night down on the farm. Triple-A: Gwinnett Stripers (Braves) 4, Norfolk Tides 3 Bruce Zimmermann cruised through the first five innings of this game. Thanks to a pair of double plays along the way, the lefty kept the visitors off the board early on. But that came to an end in the sixth inning, when he faced seven hitters, allowed four hits and gave up three runs before escaping. Cionel Pérez made his first rehab app ..read more

Photo by Daniel Shirey/MLB Photos via Getty Images Whether that’s a good thing or not is to be determined Hello, friends. The Orioles! Sometimes it feels like they can’t make it easy on us even when they’re winning. We got another round of that on Wednesday afternoon when a 6-0 lead in a game where starting pitcher Dean Kremer struck out 10 Angels batters still ended up as a 6-5 squeaker. All it really meant was Craig Kimbrel got a chance to keep marching up the saves leaderboard, which he did, now tied with John Franco for sixth place at 424 saves. Check out Andrea SK’s recap of the win, whic ..read more

After review, LA’s Jo Adell is caught stealing on a throw by James McCann and a great tag by Gunnar Henderson with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Ballgame! | Photo by Jayne Kamin-Oncea/Getty Images The Orioles had a 6-0 lead at one time that turned into another stressful win Beware of soft-tossing lefties, goes a familiar saying around these parts. I’m kidding; that’s not a saying. It’s true, though, that the 2024 Orioles have a sad .666 OPS against left-handed starters on the season thus far. But—this is a real saying—good teams find a way to win. So against Los Angeles starter Tyler An ..read more

Peter Aiken-USA TODAY Sports Trying for a series win in Los Angeles behind right-hander Dean Kremer. Admittedly, I didn’t see it coming that on Tuesday night, Grayson Rodriguez would turn in his worst start in nearly a year and that the Orioles’ scorching-hot bats would be neutralized by the likes of Griffin Canning, at least for five innings. Oh well, there is still a series to win. And to do it, the Orioles will turn to right-hander Dean Kremer, who is 0-2 with a 4.91 ERA in his last four starts. These numbers may look worse than they are. Kremer pitched a gem against the Pittsburgh Pirates ..read more

Craig Kimbrel is living up to the “Future Hall-of-Famer” tag with the Orioles

Photo by Scott Taetsch/Getty Images How does a future Hall of Famer exceed expectations in his first month with a new team? Craig Kimbrel has delivered everything the Orioles could ask for during the young season. Craig Kimbrel worked himself into into a jam Monday night before putting away one of the best hitters of the 21st century. With the tying run on second and the winning run on first, Kimbrel fired four consecutive fastballs to Mike Trout. Trout watched all four go by; three were called strikes. It’s logical that a pitcher ranked seventh on the all time saves list pitches with confiden ..read more

Orioles minor league recap 4/24: Means puts forward a strong rehab start in Tides’ loss

Photo by Daniel Shirey/MLB Photos via Getty Images The bats in Norfolk, Bowie and Delmarva all struggled to keep up with their opposition, while Aberdeen exploded for nine runs in a dominant win. Triple-A: Gwinnett Stripers (Braves) 9, Norfolk Tides 4 John Means put together one of his best rehab starts, but the Tides couldn’t ride that to a win against the Stripers. Means ran into early trouble in the top of the first, but then settled into the game. The veteran lefty gave up a one-out single to Gwinnett LF J.P. Martinez, and then consecutive two-out singles to bring home Martinez and give th ..read more

Wednesday Bird Droppings: Wrapping up on the west coast

Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images One more against the Halos, Westburg imitates Henderson, and Means looked better in rehab. Good morning, Birdland! That could have gone better. The Orioles lost 7-4 to the Angels in the early morning hours here on the east coast. The scoreline belies just how gruesome the game felt. Grayson Rodriguez had a stinker, and the offense couldn’t do enough against a starter that entered the game with an 8.05 ERA. On top of that, the Yankees did manage to beat the Athletics earlier in the day, ending the O’s perch atop the AL East after only a few hours. Of course ..read more

Rodriguez gets rocked by Angels, O’s suffer 7-4 loss in Los Angeles

Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images Grayson suffered his worst start in nearly 11 months, putting the Birds in an early deficit from which they couldn’t recover. This one, folks, was not worth staying up for. The Orioles, despite unveiling one of the most glorious lineups of homegrown talent you’ll ever see, took a disappointing loss to the Angels, 7-4. A Grayson Rodriguez implosion and a late-arriving O’s offense put the Orioles behind the eight ball from the outset, and they never recovered. Imagine you ran a thousand simulations of this game. How many would result in the previously unbeat ..read more

Even for people who were among the biggest Colton Cowser boosters going into the season, who still believed in him even after he struggled in his debut with the Orioles last year, you probably couldn’t have imagined this. I don’t just mean his ongoing great performance, I mean the other stuff that’s springing up in the aftermath. Cowser has had people moo-ing every time he’s introduced or does something good ever since Opening Day. He’s got people showing up to Orioles games wearing cow onesies. If cowbells weren’t a banned item for bringing in to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, he’d probably be ..read more
