Mid-Year, New Job! that's how it's supposed to go right?

Well, it's not quite mid-year, and I've gone and done something radical in my school psychology career again. I resigned from my urban school district where I worked with K-6th grade students and moved to a sub-urban school district where I'll be working with 9th-12th grade students. This transition will be my third official job as a school psychologist, since I became licensed in 2011. That's right - seven years, three districts. Now before your eyebrows hit your hairline, you have to know this about me. I've never really held a single job for more than 5 years. So this recent move feels q ..read more

Image courtesy of goggle search Coming off February break, I just reassessed my evaluation caseload and I’m at 95 evaluations for the year.  It's only the first week of March and I'm already at 95 evaluations. And before you think I'm whining, I don't have the most evaluations in the district. Our early childhood school psych who also services 5 different schools by the way, is well into the mid-100s for cases.  Child Outreach is also but a few weeks away.   Based on the way the consents keep rolling in at the two schools I work in, I’m betting I’ll hit 130 by yea ..read more

Work Life Harmony as a School Psychologist

It's been a hot minute since I wrote anything on this blog hasn't it?  It's not for the lack of exciting things happening in my school psychologist life, believe me. It has more to do with the fact that I just don't thrive on the excitement like I used to. Previously, anything new in the field would set my brain ablaze! I would grab the newest book, attend the latest training workshop, and return to work a new psychologist, ready to do ALL the things!  Now I'm all about harmony and zen. Which means that I'm not as hot to trot about writing about school psychology as I used to be. Per ..read more

It only took 7 years!

Since I started working as a school psychologist, I would start the new school year armed with a shiny new process I planned to use to tackle my caseload. Great new plans founded on ideas from summer readings on time management and productivity would be beautifully executed, only to fall apart like a house of cards before the thanksgiving break. I always assumed that the failure of this new plan was my doing.  My default mode has always been and sometimes still is blaming user error.  The plan was flawless, it's inefficacy was a result of my flaws.  So I'd move on to another pr ..read more

WARNING - This post contains some explicit language. I lost my filter after the winter break.  It's March 31st, I've officially broken 100 evaluation requests and today I determined based on the unique death-warmed over feeling I have that I'm coming down with the flu. Regarding my evaluations, please don't pity me!  I'm not the first one in my district to break the dreaded 100 mark. I believe that gnarly record belongs to another school psych in my district. Said school psych is currently 16 requests ahead of me. I'll be gracious, I'll lose that race. I don't have to win everything ..read more

If you do live state-side, I hope you remembered to wear your festive green and are doused from head to toe in gratuitous Irish paraphernalia. I am not. I am representing those who don't believe in reducing a culture down to a few meaningless trinkets. I stand for the truth! And I also forgot. Yes, in-spite of having children of my own who were dressed appropriately, I am wearing black and tan with jeans. Actually, should anyone ask me, I can say that I'm dressed up as a Guinness ..read more

I am nearing the end of the 4th month of the 2016 - 2017 school year. It's December, it's cold in New England. We've not gotten a lot of snow yet, but based on the winter we had last year, I expect that I will get enough snow days to ensure I work well into the middle of July. Here's hoping Mother Nature proves me wrong. It's been a minute since my last post, no?  Since my last post, I've gone through some significant changes in my life personally and professionally.  I have endured a bout of Shingles - Which thanks to Terry Bradshaw, I thought only Old White Men got.  My moth ..read more

My reports are my lasting legacy

There's a student in my school right now whose behavior is eliciting panicked reactions from teachers and support staff alike and rightfully so. This poor kiddo is currently experiencing massive withdrawal symptoms from not taking his prescribed medication while simultaneously trying to adapt to a new school setting. Once I heard this student's name, I raced to my computer to look up his records. I was aiming for either my report on him (depending on when I wrote it) or the notes from our team meeting.  Why the caveats in my search? Well approximately 3 years into my career as a school p ..read more

Five years of burgeoning as a school psychologist.

This 2015 - 2016 academic year, I will mark 5 years of service as a school psychologist.  This is especially important for me because I am beginning to apply for my Professional License as a school psychologist this year. For the last five years, I've had an Initial license. As I sit here and eat my lunch on a very gray and rainy day, I'm taking stock of myself as a school psychologist. What have I learned in the last 5 years, that preempts my move from Initial to Professional licensed school psychologist? Now before you go any further with reading this post, please unders ..read more

Late in August, I excitedly posted a picture of my sweet new office space in one of my school buildings.  Now many of you who've followed my blog for years (something that still astounds me by the way) know that I've paid my dues enclosed in a teeny cinder block room.  The fact that I now have a natural light option to brighten my space is exhilarating! At the request of a few people, I'm sharing images of my space all set up.  Next week, I'll post pictures of my other office.  The one that does not have quite as much natural light as this one - but I still LOVE it, becaus ..read more
