All the Shawls

One of the great joys of having ones own blog is the ability to put a set of images in one post for absolutely no reason other than the satisfaction of collecting them all in one place. I could write something about how I used to think shawls were ridiculous and now I’m a total convert, but I think the evidence here pretty much speaks for itself. When applicable, a more detailed blog post about the shawl has been linked to its image below. They are shown below in the order they were made. This post is not comprehensive as I didn’t have a wall shot of the Imposter Shawl for Clementine and ..read more

Today I want to showcase Delia of Delia Creates, who has sewn SO many beautiful Geranium dresses with the Expansion Pack for her daughter over the years. Here are just three of my favorites of the the many that she has created. Take a look… Delia used the bodice extension, zipper closure, and fitted long sleeve pattern piece from the Expansion Pack for this stunning lace holiday dress she made for her daughter for Christmas in 2017. For all of the details and more photos, check out Delia's post: read more: Lace Holiday Dress For our Geranium Expansion Pack Tour, Delia created this ado ..read more

Green Rose Pants

It’s tempting to call this post “Emerald Rose Pants” but I thought that might be a little confusing (with the Emerald pattern and all). I do gravitate towards somewhat predictable hues and this deep green is one of those colors that I just love, especially in winter. I’ve had this raw silk noil fabric for a couple of years with the intention of making a pair of Rose pants, and I cut them out in April of 2020. As is frequently the case, other things got in the way in terms of projects until earlier this year when I finally finished them. As I recall it was May, but it was starting to get too ..read more

Pattern Spotlight: Geranium Expansion Pack
Made By Rae

It’s that time of year for holiday parties and last minute Christmas sewing, so I thought it would be a good time to shine the spotlight on the Geranium Expansion Pack, a pattern that has enabled many a holiday and special occasion dress. The Geranium Expansion Pack is an add-on pattern that I designed to be used in conjunction with the original Geranium Dress, and of course it’s been used over the years by many people to create adorable dresses for all sorts of celebrations: birthday, first day of school, wedding, you name it, but also just every day wear. This is THE essential pattern if y ..read more

How to sew Jade with a puff sleeve
Made By Rae
by Rae Hoekstra
2M ago
Here’s a quick tutorial on how to create a puff-sleeved Jade tee! Jade is an indispensable part of my everyday uniform; it’s knit so it’s comfy and goes with jeans. I’ve made many versions of this pattern not only “as-is” — there are four different sleeve lengths and two interchangeable neckline options that come with the pattern — but also some variations like a turtleneck or a flat hem (see this post: 3 Merino Jade Tees for some examples). For this version, I used the Jade Tee Sewing pattern and added width to the sleeve piece by slashing and spreading it at the center, gathered the top and ..read more

Hellooo!! Clementine and I just got back from visiting my parents and sister Elli in Washington, just outside of Seattle. We didn't spend much time outside because the smoke from nearby wildfires made for pretty horrible air quality, but Elli and I did escape the smoke for a couple of days with a fun trip with our daughters via ferry to Bainbridge Island, a really beautiful spot to visit this time of year (pics below). Fall is even more beautiful back here in Michigan (though: I might be biased…). The red and sugar maple trees almost look like they are aflame. We’ve been doing “fall” stuff li ..read more

Reworking Unworn Makes
Made By Rae

Last winter I attempted a closet purge ala KonMari method and got stuck on a pile of handmade items that I never really wore. I think a lot of you can relate to this: when you spend time and money making something, it lives in a different category than store-bought clothing, which (at least for me) makes it harder to get rid of. It’s almost like the extra meaning it accumulated as you slowly crafted it into something wearable makes it harder to part with. There’s some guilt, too: I’ve spent hours making something, only to have it sit in the back of my closet, unworn and unloved, never seeing t ..read more

Finished: Quilted Rainbow Coat
Made By Rae

My quilted coat is finished, as you can gather from the title as well as the gratuitous number of photos in this post. Am quite pleased with self over the whole thing, as you can probably also see. To be fair, the project was a bit of a gamble that I wasn’t sure initially would pan out, seeing as the pattern pieces were self drafted and untested in any real way prior to this coat, so I’m pleasantly surprised at how well it fits. The outer is entirely made with scraps from previous projects or solid cotton remnants I already had in my stash. I also used a union chambray that was gifted to me f ..read more

Pink Cleo Skirt
Made By Rae
by Rae Hoekstra
4M ago
When we updated Cleo into new sizes earlier this year, I decided that I wanted to change the pattern pieces a bit to make the front and back skirt pattern pieces the same width. This simplified the layout and conserves paper not only when we have the Cleo print pattern reprinted in the new sizes, but also when someone prints out their Cleo PDF at home or at a copyshop. Originally Cleo was a made-to-measure workshop that I offered as a class, and you’d create the front and back rectangles based on your waist measurement and they were the same width — you’d just carve out the pockets on the fro ..read more

Hellooo!! Well, we finally got COVID over here and boy did it suuuuuuck. Hugo was the first to come down with it over Labor Day weekend, followed by me, and then Mr Rae and the big kids. Nearly a month later, honestly, I’m still recovering. Taking it easy, taking it day by day and trying to best assess what I have the energy for. For Labor Day weekend, we drove up to northern Michigan with our bikes to try to capture the last few days of summer and spend some time in the sun and by the water (we didn’t realize Hugo had COVID) and I finished my quilted coat. Good thing too; this coat really to ..read more
