As scorching heat grips large swaths of the Earth, a lot of people are trying to put the extreme temperatures into context and asking: When was it ever this hot before?
Globally, 2023 has seen some of the hottest days in modern measurements, but what about farther back, before weather stations and satellites?
Some news outlets have reported that daily temperatures hit a 100,000-year high.
As a paleoclimate scientist who studies temperatures of the past, I see where this claim comes from, but I cringe at the inexact headlines. While this claim may well be ..read more

Economics has a huge impact on the world we live in. And today, the world is tasked with creating a sustainable economy that lifts people out of poverty and reduces inequality, while at the same time not exhausting the planet’s natural resources and exacerbating climate change and ecological collapse. How can we work together to build a stronger and more sustainable economy?
An important first step is understanding the ..read more

If things don’t change fast, the fashion industry could use one-quarter of the world’s remaining global carbon budget and use 35 percent more land to produce fibers by 2030.
While this seems incredible, it’s not. Over the past 15 years, clothing production has doubled — yet the length of time that we actually wear these clothes has fallen by nearly 40 percent. In the EU, falling prices have seen people buying more clothing than ever before while spending less money in the process.
This is not sustainable. Something has to give.

TED-Ed is a non-profit, and we’re eager to keep putting free, high-quality, educational videos into the world all the way up to the heat death of the Universe. So far, our more than 1,400 videos have been watched more than 4 billion times, which we find pretty awe-inspiring.

So, like many other creators, we make partnerships with other organizations to sustain our operations. Unlike many other creators, we aren’t looking to make a profi ..read more
