A Critical Examination of Education in America

As an educator, it may surprise you to hear that I view most of American education as a scam that drastically needs reform. No amount of debt forgiveness will get to the root of the problems in our education system from high school, all the way through graduate school. As a high school history teacher, I can assure you that our students are not receiving the education they deserve. While some of us do try to teach life lessons such as taxes, how to get the most tax breaks, investment strategies, and how to start their own small businesses, most teachers do not. Furthermore, we do not teach st ..read more

Kindergarten Start for Children Born September - December?

Hi everyone! Hoping to ask for thoughtful insight here. My daughter was born in the fall and, in the school district where we live, their policy is that 4-year-olds whose 5th birthday is between September 1st and December 31st, and who have the academic competence and emotional maturity, can start kindergarten at that time instead of waiting an additional year. In trying to plan out daycare/preschool and sorting what's best for my child,I am hoping to consider all of the pros and cons. More information about our circumstances: -My daughter is likely highly gifted. The school is a K-6 with gif ..read more

i’m 22f & was a gifted student in high school lol. didn’t go to college after i graduated bc of covid and now im just about in a situation where i feel i can go back to college within the next year or two, and im thinking that might be the right move for me. i don’t remember much from high school, so i definitely need a few refreshers, and have really been struggling. i do best with videos but they have to be actually interesting, but obviously im looking for things like websites, books, or textbooks, too. in high school i was really interested in genealogical history, as well as history ..read more

Test on Saturday Morning

My teacher is requiring us to come in for a practice AP test on Saturday morning. The test will be put on our grade as a weighted score. This wouldn’t be a big deal except call time for a matinee is the same time as the scheduled end. I’ve taken multiple AP classes and every practice exam starts late (10-30) minutes. I talked to her about this and the only thing she’ll do is let me leave once I’ve finished the last section but we’ve done multiple of these in class and I generally finish in the last 5-10 minutes. Is there anything I can do? submitted by /u/HayHay0721 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Trying to choose a science major

I live in a region that has a tremendous amount of caves and fossil beds. I am keenly interested in the preservation of these spaces, in educating people on these specimens, and in envionmental conservation and cleanup. I am also interested in mycology and potentially learning more about how to use mushrooms and fungi to help preserve and clean up the environment. (ie bioplastivores) I haven’t settled on exactly what I want to do, but these are of the greatest interest to me. What major(s) would I even need to pursue in order to study these things? *I am not interested in warnings about low p ..read more

School system broken?

If every question was a "thinking" question everyone would be a genius. But instead schools are currently structured so that you just memorize how to do something and execute it on your own. In my opinion this is what results in people being "school smart" but idiots when it comes to actually living and if schools taught the same material but rather only tested us using "thinking" questions everyone would be significantly smarter. Do you think this was done intentionally (cough cough conflict theory of social change) or have we just reached a point where schools are just lazy/ underfunded and ..read more
