Koshchei, often referred to as “Koshchei the Deathless” or “Koshchei the Devil” is a figure from Slavic folklore and a one time foe of Hellboy. He first appeared in the Darkness Calls (2007) chapter of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comic, having been sent by Baba Yaga to kill Hellboy. This book Koshchei In Hell is the 2nd omnibus collection ( the 1st been Koshchei The Deathless ) that follows the travails of Koshchei after his run-in with Hellboy, with familiar characters in the Hellboy universe showing up, like the Witchfinder ( Sir Edward Grey ). As a big fan of Hellboy and Mike Mignola’s work, I ..read more

My Own Stories – Akira Kusaka Illustration Book Review

My Own Stories (名も無い街は 空想と共に) is a collection of illustrations by Osaka based Japanese artist Akira Kusaka (日下明), who first started out in the industry creating album cover art for the duo rock group Yorushika (ヨルシカ). I was happy to discover this book while browsing at the giant Maruzen bookstore near Tokyo station during my earlier time in Japan this spring. With recurring visual motifs centered around the crescent moon and serene, starry firmament, Kusaka’s quiet and dreamy imagery invokes a soothing and peaceful state of mind for me, rather like a non-threatening version of Rene Magritte’s ..read more

After a long period of inactivity and relative quiet since the (2nd) last book release from the 1st phase of the OTOMO THE COMPLETE WORKS, there was a flurry of exciting news in the past week regarding phase 2. I thought I gather up all the news I can find scattered over twitter and share them here for Otomo/AKIRA fans. Quick disclaimer here : there’s quite a bit of information been released, and some of them might have been updated since I published this post, so I might not have the latest or most accurate version; that or my translation is just plain wrong/sucked. If so, kindly let me know ..read more

Diego Rivera: The Complete Murals Art Book Review ( Taschen )

Diego Rivera (1886 – 1957) was a prominent Mexican painter. His large frescoes helped establish the mural movement in Mexican and international art. My only awareness of the artist was through the 2002 film Frida ( directed by Julie Taymor ), with actor Alfred Molina playing the role as husband to the equally famous artist Frida Kahlo. But I was not at all familiar with his actual art work and paintings. No, the start of my education regarding the brilliance of Diego Rivera’s work was when I got the chance to browse through this giant hardcover book at the Tsutaya Ginza Six bookstore earlier ..read more

Tokyo Spring Trip 2024 – Sakura Cherry Blossoms Part II

I was not quite satisfied with the photographs of the cherry blossoms I took around the Meguro River, in part due to the less than ideal weather as well as the maddening crowds ( I’m aware I am a part of it ) that made the experience rather uncomfortable, so I decided to try my luck somewhere else. I recalled the last time I saw cherry blossoms in Tokyo more than a decade ago in Musashi-Seki Park, and it was really beautiful, so I decided to head down to that area again. And the sights were amazing indeed ! I did not venture as far into the actual park itself like the last time but only staye ..read more

The French Dispatch (titled onscreen as The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun) is a 2021 American anthology comedy drama film written, directed, and produced by Wes Anderson from a story he conceived with Roman Coppola, Hugo Guinness, and Jason Schwartzman. It features an expansive ensemble cast and follows three different story-lines as the French foreign bureau of the fictional Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun newspaper publishes its final issue. Certainly one of the biggest highlights of any Wes Anderson production are the meticulously designed and crafted sets and props, all s ..read more

Dandelion is the second art book by Fukuoka based Japanese illustrator Zashikiwarashi (ざしきわらし), a bold and vibrantly colored collection of female portraits adorned in stylish street apparel and futuristic headphone tech gear. I reviewed the artist’s first art book Color Palette back in 2021 ( read my review here ). The visual attractiveness of Zashikiwarashi’s impish female characters are in no small part thanks to the artist’s incredible color sense, with striking, complementary combinations that make the illustrations pop off the pages. The artist’s keen eye and astute sense of stylish stre ..read more

I spotted this sketchbook of Rome by artist Fabrice Moireau while in a bookstore in Tokyo and after thumbing through just a few pages, I was mesmerized by his beautiful watercolor illustrations of the city. I’ve only been to Rome once many years ago, but it is such an amazing city filled with rich cultural heritage ( not to mention excellent coffee ! ), and Fabrice’s lively illustrations really transport me back to the wonderful time I spent there. All the pieces showcased in the book are beautiful, but the wide vista shots are something special indeed. I also love the clean layout and the cu ..read more
