Now and again I’ll answer an art question on quora. Here’s the latest question: Q. Is it more beneficial to learn how to draw or paint from good artists rather than good teachers? A. Good artists ARE good teachers. You can’t teach art well without being a good artist yourself. But it takes more than just being a good artist to be a good teacher. It takes patience, understanding, great communication skills, dedication, and a genuine desire to help people. As a working artist myself and an art teacher I personally found the most help from a patient teacher whom I loved in college. She’s eith ..read more

Every once in a while I answer a question on Quora. Today this question irked me so I responded. It irked me because… well you’ll see. Q. Can drawing be learned or is it a natural talent? Can someone with no artistic skill become good at drawing? A. Which Came first the chicken or the egg? I’m an Artist and I have been one my whole life. I go around drawing caricatures at parties and that’s my job (please see my info at the end of this article I’m available for bookings). Anyway I also teach children how to draw. Most of them can learn once they know the steps. It’s pretty cool looking at ..read more

The New York Times just ran this article about high-class resorts and how they’re offering more and more bespoke (customized) experiences to lure people in. But Bespoke experiences are expensive and difficult to pull off. How can smaller resorts, hotels and businesses compete? If you’re in the hospitality industry and are looking to add some value to your proposition, I can help. My name is Kathryn Buskett. I’m a live caricaturist with 25 years of experience drawing live at all kinds of events all over the USA and beyond. My live caricature entertainment is probably the easiest, least expe ..read more

Unique graduation party ideas

My caricatures are a great alternative to a Photo Booth as six different graduation parties this week alone can attest to. Yea! 6 grad parties in one week! I also drew at a wedding AND a funeral. (Memorial service, they called it. I was hired to make it less sad. I think it worked too!) I even drew at a pre-k graduation! One of the great things about caricatures is that they are truly unique. Not only are caricaturists extremely rare (there are more brain surgeons than caricaturists!), but also love caricatures are the only entertainment that also functions as a party favor. If Americans have a rite of passage into adulthood, it is this. The graduation ceremony. Graduating from high school is simultaneously joyful, tearful, and terrifying. I was privileged to draw Caricatures for the graduation of Holmes county high school in Bonifay FL. and to draw the graduates on the very night that they stepped over the threshold from child to adult. I got to give some words of advice, calm some fears, encourage them to follow their passions, to find what they are if they don’t know yet, and to help them travel to this, the next stage of their journey. I’m humbled. I got t ..read more

“unknown sitters” and caricatures My job as a caricaturist brings me to such interesting places! The one this last Saturday was definitely a first.  The Historic New Orleans collection museum in New Orleans had a contest featuring “unknown sitters” - people who were painted but no one knew who they were.  So the museum decided to have a contest. School children from all over the USA were asked to write brief stories about the unknown sitters. The results were astonishing. I went in and looked around before I started. Some of the stories were funny. Some were distu ..read more
