Why images and videos are affecting sales and SEO

When I first redesigned this website, I acquired beautiful copyright-free drone footage of the Castlefield area of Manchester. It was placed in the Home page hero section. A drone shot of the new Deansgate Towers, the Castlefield basin and viaducts looked great. But. When I tested the website speed on GTMetrix however my mood sank faster than a Tory on a council estate. The speed was Grade E. And the culprit? That video. Even after compression before uploading to the WordPress Media Library, and some internal plugin compression, the video was a whopping 30MB. I removed it and replaced it with ..read more

Testing your website speed – an SEO factor

There are reckoned to be over 200 SEO ranking factors and one, without doubt, is loading speed. When I redesigned this website recently, I included some Manchester drone footage of Castlefield on the Home page, sat smugly back and marvelled at it. But. When I tested the website on GTMetrix, a page loading speed for the Home page was recorded at Grade D, a slip from its previous design at Grade A. The culprit? The drone video. It’s now gone. GTMetrix is a very useful browser tool. Register and you can set your location to London, pop in your URL (or your rivals’ websites) and see the speed anal ..read more

I’ve become quite the pocket-book philosopher in the past 18 months. So much so, that a cursory glance at Instagram, Facebook or TikTok sees me inundated with stoic advice, tips for success and, the most common, healing. If you fall off a bike (as I did last year), break an arm or leg, sympathetic attention and advice flows in. Mental health Suffer from mental health and you soon find out who is really in your circle. Who’s got your back, so to speak. This past 18 months has been revelatory in self-discovery. I’ve found out who can be trusted, who will salve you in times of need and realised t ..read more

I am about to launch a new business, details of which will emerge shortly. I thought then I’d write a post about how to start a business in 2024. Knowing what I know now, I have easy steps for myself (and you, if you fancy starting a business) to follow: Buy a domain name. We always recommend sourcing one on 20i, screen grabbing the name and letting Gareth set the domain, emails and site up. Try to avoid hyphens, make it fairly short (3 words are optimum) and purchase .com or .co.uk for one year or more, Get a logo with the name and an icon designed, we do this cost-effectively. It’s worth re ..read more

Ho Chi Minh City week one, the adventure of a lifetime

3 weeks in Vietnam You’ve probably noticed that I’m spending 3 weeks on work and leisure in Vietnam. I arrived last Friday and was whisked to the Mekong Delta by Annie, a former colleague and great friend, for two nights and I’ve blogged about that here. We arrived back at Annie’s bougie apartment block almost a week ago now and I’ve fully immersed myself in the coffee, tea, culinary and cultural scene of Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City and can state, hand on heart, it’s the best place I’ve ever been to. Why? The people are so friendly and warm, like the weather. The heat is oppressive, though the l ..read more

Mixing work and pleasure in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

About 8 months ago, my mate and former colleague Annie mentioned in a Facebook messenger conversation that I should come and visit her in Ho Chi Minh City (former Saigon) and the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. I was keen, as I worked with Annie for almost 3 years in a nice school in Bolton. Most teachers are not pleasant people at all (more toxic than a British river) but I knew Annie was different. I looked online at flight prices, made some mental notes and went back to diurnal life in Manchester. Fast forward to April 2024 and another message came in from Annie and this time I acted. I carped the ..read more
