Now that I’m home from my second Clinic rendezvous, and let me tell you, it was a knowledge overload. The squad – Holly, Paige, Jo, and Dr. Coles – they broke it down into bite-sized pieces so I could wrap my head around it. And bonus, they threw in the "call us anytime" card, 'cause, you know, ain't nobody got time to remember everything from the first meeting. So, by the end of the pow-wow with my dream team, here's the 411 I scooped up: New Gig Alert: My mission? Keep tabs on my blood sugar so I can decode what's up and decide on the treatment move. Foodie with a Twist: Eating game s ..read more

Currently, I'm rocking the Libre Freestyle 2, and even though I’ve had one for 6 months they have already made huge upgrades.  When I started out with this I had to actually hold my phone up to the sensor to get a reading, now with some fancy software changes, it gives me my blood sugar numbers all the time.  And I'm crossing my fingers for that Freestyle 3 upgrade, which sounds like it will be even smaller. The recent update with the constant feed is seriously mind-blowing. It makes me realize how fortunate I am to be a kid with diabetes now. I mean, go back 20 years, and the tech ..read more

Before I even bounced from the hospital, the staff had made an appointment at the Markham Stouffville Pediatric Diabetes Clinic for me.  I thought it was just to get out of the hospital as I know their role on the pediatric floor is just to get me better so I can leave there.   The Clinic are the ones who help me make my way through figuring out how to deal with my type 1 diabetes.  Let me start by saying how awesome my new “team” is.  I have four new main people in my life, a nurse who specializes in kids with diabetes named Holly, a dietician who specializes in eati ..read more

Let's talk about the lowdown on how to spot if you're playing tag with type 1 diabetes. I spilled the beans a few blogs back about how I found out, but for those who stumbled upon my ramblings on the web, here's the info on the symptoms to watch out for: Constantly Tired: Feeling like a walking zombie? I get it, growth spurts and all, but if you're dragging yourself around 24/7, consider checking for other signs too. Mysterious Weight Drop: Shedding pounds without trying? If your body's tapping into fat and muscle for fuel due to sugar processing issues, and you're not on a secret worko ..read more

I was reading thru my blogs and I see now I never really gave you the short story on what's going on.  So let's dive into the nitty-gritty of how our bodies roll with that energy game. Picture this: Your body's a beast that runs on glucose – basically, sugar. It's the juice that powers your every move, from busting a run to crushing it in sports, or even just flexing those brain muscles to think. Energy for days, make sense? So, how do we score this glucose energy? Food, my friends. You chow down, and your food transforms into this sweet glucose goodness that boosts your energy levels. Th ..read more

If you are reading my Blog, you probably have a type 1 diabetes story kinda like mine right?  It’s a wild ride?  Two things happened that day at Markham-Stouffville Clinic: one got my first taste of the tech we all wear.  I was “outfitted” with a Libre 2 sensor for letting me know what my blood sugar readings were.  More about Libre 2 later. And I saw something on the wall that looked cool.  While we were at the clinic, they had a poster on the wall about this canoe trip for diabetics.  I’ve been camping with my family forever, so an outback canoe trip to Algonqui ..read more

It’s been six months since I was diagnosed. It feels like yesterday.  Let me take you back to the weeks leading up to this whole diabetes bombshell.   I had lost weight. Like close to 10 lbs over a month or so.  I didn’t think that much about it as I also grew about 3 inches in a short period of time.  My parents didn’t even notice as I am built like a tall skinny kid and they thought I was having a big growth spurt and that’s why I was skinny.   I was playing baseball and what I really noticed was I was having a hard time concentrating on hitting the ball ..read more

So, everything was going down the usual route, you know? Grade 7 was cool, got some new buddies, and things were pretty interesting. I was, meeting some fresh faces, just your regular socializing stuff. Post-COVID life, we're all trying to piece things together. But then, around May, after a ski trip, everything started going south. I started feeling sick, like really sick. Every day, it was like, wake up, feel like crap. I was all into baseball at that point, I've always been a sports guy. Baseball season was in full swing, pun intended. But I started noticing things were going downhill real ..read more
