Des Moines, Iowa – June 24, 2024 – RCS is proud to announce the outstanding achievements of our students at the 2024 National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) National Championship held in Des Moines, Iowa. The tournament, which commenced in March with regional and state qualifying events, culminated in an intense week-long competition featuring top students from around the nation.

Are you happy?
The word ‘happiness’ is rooted in the same word as happen. So really, we are ‘happy’ when things ‘happen’ the way we want them to ‘happen.’ A deeper dive into the word reveals that the root ‘hap’ connotes a lucky occurrence. This is actually sad because, in a sense, our happiness is determined by events outside our control. Biblically, we are commanded to have joy (Philippians 4:4), but we are never commanded to be happy. Although I would love to contrast biblical happiness and joy, I will save that for another time.

I loved high school: I was very involved, had good friends, enjoyed my church, and drove a red Ford Pinto — what more could life offer? But I felt that when I walked across that stage and received my high school diploma, my life would be changed forever. I purchased my graduation cap and gown, invitations were mailed, and I even had my hair newly permed for the big event (this was 1979, after all).
