The Meals That Made Me

This morning I laid out a baking sheet and placed a pack of Pilsbury crescent rolls out to throw in the beat up oven of my senior year dorm at BC. This was our usual weekend routine, rotating who had to pick up the next sleeve each week. Our morning debriefs weren’t quite the same without the nostalgic taste of the same rolls that our families had made at home for dinners and get-togethers. The universal experience of Pillsbury crescent rolls was something we cherished at school. When the timer went off and I pulled the tray out of the little white oven we attempted to cook with, we all huddle ..read more

Matcha for the Ages

The taste of matcha definitely isn’t for everyone, but for me, it feels like home. The dark green tea, mixed with my favorite oat milk, just happens to be my ideal morning ritual. While I usually tend to make my own matcha from home, I have yet to find matcha as good as the one from my favorite store in NYC – Rosecrans. This one-stop-shop is both a flower shop and cozy café. Last summer, I stumbled upon Rosecrans in search of a matcha, and found so much more. When you first enter the café, you are greeted with multiple big flower bouquets to your right, and a few small tables to your left. Wal ..read more

Buffalo Chicken Dip: Spicing Up Our Nights!
Gusto Journal

Whether it is for a Monday night Bachelor viewing, a birthday party pregame, or a Boston College Men’s Hockey game, my roommates and I will find any excuse to make buffalo chicken dip. The dip itself combines all the flavors from the classic Buffalo Wing platters and transforms it into a tasty bite. With the perfect blend of tangy and spicy flavors, it is the ultimate crowd-pleaser for any type of event we throw, especially for those who love spicy foods, like me.          Not only is buffalo chicken dip a staple in our household, but it’s also extremely ..read more

Dad’s Oatmeal Stations

The dishes that I have made during my college years have varied in many ways – some of them spicy, others sweet, while others are full cooked meals or simple quick snacks. When I reflect on my cooking experiences, a dish that stands out to me is oatmeal, and in particular, my dad’s oatmeal “stations”. While this may seem like a plain and unassuming dish, oats are extremely useful and can be prepared in several exciting ways. When I forget about oatmeal, I return to it with a new appreciation. Oatmeal is inherently an easy dish to make. However, one of the main struggles I’ve found when making ..read more

Four Years of Cheesecake
Gusto Journal
by Gusto Magazine

As an avid baker, I tried experimenting with different desserts, including cakes, cookies, and the best dessert, cheesecake. Four years ago, I would come home from school hoping that my mom had bought all the ingredients needed to make a cheesecake, and I would listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers songs in the kitchen. The first cheesecake I made wasn’t perfect, and is why I set myself the purpose to make the perfect cheesecake. I would post on my close friends Instagram stories, the process of making it, and of course a taste test. The next day at school I would take a piece to share with my frien ..read more

Enough with the iPads

It feels dystopian. As you finish repeating the order, the cashier turns a sleek ominous-looking screen your way. ‘It’s gonna ask you a question,” they say. It’s not a question. You’re being asked to tip on top of an $18.35 burger with a side of fries and a fountain drink. And it’s awkward—not just for you, but for the cashier as well. But time and again, you do it anyway. Or at least, you do it sometimes. At this point, I could end things. Because in the grand scheme of life, tipping $3.24 on a burger run is not a big deal.  But why is it that this sort of ritual—tipping on an iPad every ..read more

Connecticut Clam Chowder

Clam Chowder might be my favorite food. A warm bowl of potatoes, clams, and creamy broth is the key to fixing a bad day or making a good day great. Every year, when my family makes our annual drive to Cape Cod, we immediately put clam chowder on the stove and sit around the table until each of our bowls is clean. Whether it is a bag from Star Market, a Progresso can, or my mom’s homemade recipe, clam chowder always fills my stomach and makes the day just a little bit better.  Most clam chowders I have had have been cream-based. The cream thickens the chowder and gives the broth a creamine ..read more

Grilled Octopus: A Welcome to Spring

Spring weather is finally here, and I don’t know about you, but one of the things that gets me the most excited about the warming weather is that seafood season is fast approaching. Growing up in a coastal city, good quality seafood was a big marker of my upbringing. I was raised to appreciate and embrace all kinds of seafood ranging from king crab to scallops to sea urchins, so when it comes to seafood there isn’t anything I wouldn’t try—partly because I enjoy it so much, but also because seafood actually became part of my culture and spending the summer at the beach eating seafood with frien ..read more

Grandma’s Store Bought Cookies

Recently I visited my grandparent’s home, and it got me thinking about how food can make an impact on us. Grandma’s food always tastes the best, and for me that was no exception. I still remember visiting my grandparents during the summer, and being so excited to eat all the desserts and goodies that my grandma had perpetually stocked in her kitchen. My grandma always had a little tasty treat on hand, and I still remember my time there as some of my favorite food experiences ever. The funny thing was, my grandma barely ever cooked.  She had been a doctor at Mass General Hospital for over ..read more

Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins, Fit for a Flight

As a fan of any and all desserts, baking is one of my favorite hobbies. It is a way to have fun, destress, and be creative, all while making something delicious to enjoy with friends and family. I know I’m not alone, then, in my frustration over not having a kitchen in my dorm. There are many things I love about living on campus with my friends, but being unable to bake whenever my heart pleases is a major drawback. So, whenever I get a chance to go home, I spend all of my free time in the kitchen to fulfill my baking fix for the rest of the semester. This Easter break, I baked every chance I ..read more
