Jean Ray: A Reader’s Guide

July 8th is the birthday of “the Belgian Poe,” Jean Ray. I have written something for his birthday in a (perhaps quixotic) quest to bring attention to him for a couple of years. This year I decided to write out an overview of his works available in English. Well, those easily available in English. There have been some pricey specialty press editions which I do not have. The Original Ray These are the works published in English by Wakefield Press. (Though Malpertuis has also been published by Atlas Press.) They constitute what I consider his main body of work. Whisky Tales: Ray’s first publish ..read more

Lair of the Brain Eaters RPG Adventure Module Now Available

I’m very excited to announce that my first properly published RPG module, The Lair of the Brain Eaters, is now available! Brain Eaters is a sword-and-sorcery-themed old school dungeon crawl for use with the Lamentations of the Flame Princess game system. The module is based on the short story of the same title from my first collection Necromancy in Nilztiria, but quite a few details have been changed, so players who’ve read the story will still be in for surprises. If you’re not familiar with Lamentations, rules-wise it’s very similar to Basic Dungeons & Dragons, but they aim to invoke a ..read more

David Gemmell on the Art and Craft of Writing
DMR Books
by Mark Kirby

The late heroic fantasy author David Gemmell needs no introduction for most of the readers of this blog. Morgan Holmes called him “The Man who Saved Sword and Sorcery Fiction,” and Steve Tompkins once referred to him as “our favourite genre’s second wind.” To most of his fans he was, and to many still remains, The King of Heroic Fantasy. Almost a decade ago I went through as many of David Gemmell’s interviews as I could find to collate his advice and commentary on writing, which I organised into categories by topic for my own greater understanding of his perspective on aspects of the art an ..read more

Rusty Burke: Good News, Bad News
DMR Books

Rusty Burke, one of the great living REH scholars, suffered a near-fatal fall in December 2023. He recently sent an update to his friend, ‘Indy’ Bill Cavalier. Below is the email verbatim from Indy: “Here is the word from the old boy himself. While we'll miss him at Howard Days, let's continue with good thoughts and prayers of healing. They certainly are working! Hello Dear Friends, I have been working hard to be able to attend Howard Days, but have been advised by my physical therapist and others that it would be too soon. My recovery process is still ongoing, and I don't want to risk losin ..read more

Neither Beg Nor Yield: Stories with S&S Attitude edited by Jason M. Waltz  Rogue Blades Entertainment Cover and interior art by M. D. Jackson 2024 The genesis of this epic collection began with the desire of Jason Waltz to devote more time to his writing. You see, as a publisher he was spending copious amounts of time reading, editing and publishing other author's stories, leaving little time to his own craft. Emulating the spirit of sword & sorcery, Jason wasn't going to go gently into that good night. No. He made a list of authors who he felt consistently wrote with S&S att ..read more

Howard Days 2023 (Part Two)
DMR Books
by Deuce Richardson

So, Ken Lizzi, Brian Murphy and myself had combined our powers to make the perilous—but rewarding—pilgrimage to Cross Plains, Texas, where the 2023 Howard Days gathering was being held. Getting some pre-HD revelry and badinage in on Thursday night, the three of us retired to a redoubt in the Central Texas wilderness to prepare for two days of full-on Howardian celebration and fellowship. The next morning, we were up and out by around 9 a.m. Ken had fiddled with his GPS and we took a different route out. No matter how you sliced it, getting to or from the Hideaway involved a fair amount of back ..read more
