If they didn’t purchase plastic offsets from rePurpose Global (where plastic that doesn’t get recycled gets burned) we’d be super happy with Clean Cult. Clean Cult is a relatively new company that pretty much does what Grove Collaborative and Blueland also do — and that is ship you cleaning products that are “sustainable” or “earth-friendly.” We could not find out much about the company from their website, but we found out more about the co-founder and CEO, Ryan Lupberger, here. From the piece in The Fund, Ryan had this to say about Clean Cult: I was born and raised in Colorado with an all a ..read more

Ten things we learned about buying sustainable products in 2023.

Paul and I spent a good portion of this year buying, trying and writing (not always, as we have a backlog of products to review) about earth-friendly, sustainable products; from dishwasher tablets to refillable cleaning products, laundry sheets, small-batch natural deodorants, shampoo and conditioner bars to some really great sustainable lipsticks. Paul did not try the lipsticks but he does use the shampoo bars and then I get upset because he leaves them melting in a puddle of water as he doesn’t get it that they’re $15 shampoo bars and not a $1 bar of body soap from Costco. But, I digress. V ..read more

Let’s not kid ourselves, we live in a very disposable world. We like convenience. We like our products to be kept clean—and safe from tampering. And many companies over wrap their products under layers of plastic since it thwarts shoplifting because blister packaging is a real pain to carry let alone open. How many of you have cut yourselves while attempting to open a big plastic blister pack? I can count the times on both hands. The blister pack Safe yet annoying beyond belief. But the overriding issue is not us, the consumers, it’s the manufacturers, corporations and lobbying groups who pu ..read more

Since we have children in their 20s and they have friends (also in their 20s) we conducted an informal survey. The main question was “What is one thing about sustainability that is important to you, as someone your age?” Every single one of them responded with, in one way or another, “Making sure our planet doesn’t boil.” Climate change and global warming are real and the 20-somethings we spoke to are trying to figure out why this issue is not the one we should all be working on to fix immediately. And they do think we have the ability to truly fix this. With science on their side, they are p ..read more

The power sheet on the right is from the box, the one on the left is from my washer. It didn’t quite work. I really wanted to like these. Here’s why: Arm & Hammer offers me a way to avoid plastic bottles with both these power sheets and their powdered detergent in cardboard boxes. It’s a trusted brand. We use Arm & Hammer baking soda for so many things, from brushing our teeth to cleaning nasty stains to deodorizing things like our refrigerator, freezer and kitty litter pans. The box claims that these sheets have “quick dissolve technology.” I thought, great, this one will actua ..read more

An aerial view of a cement plant outside Jarkarta operated by PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI), September 21, 2021. The global cement industry says it’s burning more plastic waste as a cheaper, cleaner alternative to coal. Some scientists and academics told Reuters that plastic is a dirty fuel that releases harmful air emissions. REUTERS/Willy Kurniawan (This photo and caption were taken directly from Reuters.) Burning plastic trash in poorer parts of the world to fuel cement kilns is not being “plastic neutral” nor is it a path to sustainability. It’s polluting the world even more and sp ..read more
