I just need a breather. Four kids. One is graduating in two weeks. We’ve got baseball games, concerts, swimming… I’m going slightly bonkers trying to keep up. I’ve started four different articles and just can’t seem to find the motivation to finish them. My BRP Design Challenge entry is similarly suffering. This is really not the time for this kind of mental blockage or any, for that matter.   Going back to yesterday for a minute. I’ve been going through a lot of negativity. The energy has been very dense around here. It just feels heavy. I know that’s hard to understand for some people ..read more

I’ve been watching a lot about real world manifestation as of late. Apologies in advance to the TTRPG fans out there. This article relates more to Law of Attraction and what I’m working to manifest rather than tabletop roleplaying. I’m going through a bit of a mental struggle when it comes to TTRPG content as of late. This is just taking a step back to catch my breath before all kinds of things happen. For those who maybe aren’t familiar with the Manifestation process, Law of Attraction or Vibration, this might seem pretty esoteric and weird. Not my normal blog content, but I do spend a lot of ..read more

The Deadline for the BRP Design Challenge draws ever closer. Here’s the link again. I probably won’t stop talking about it until everything is said and done. It’s a great contest and a good system to be working with. BRP: Universal Game Engine has the benefit of being incredibly well playtested over decades of Pendragon, Call of Cthulhu, and Runequest. The game is fairly intuitive if one has ever played Dungeons & Dragons 5E. Just swap a lot of the skill rolls out for percentile dice. I recommend the game for anyone who likes a bit of crunch with their fluff. My own game is a work in progr ..read more

Is It Yet Another Manufactured Controversy by Wizards of the Coast. In all honesty, some of the absolute toxicity online these days has been caused by the one company that should be full of light and celebration from January 1st all the way through December 31st. What did they do instead? Disclaimer: Statements expressed in this article are strictly my opinion. If you disagree or have a different opinion, that’s okay. I’m not an expert on everything. I’m not always right. I’m just writing from my experience as I know it. Your mileage may vary. Well, Wizards of the Coast in their infinite falli ..read more

MY OPINION on What Wizards o/t Coast should have done.

I was absolutely flabbergasted when I saw exactly how little WotC was doing for the 50th anniversary of the world’s most famous, dare I say “most beloved” tabletop roleplaying game of all time. Did you know D&D turned 50 this year? The company in charge of the game seems like they want to keep it a secret. This article is going to be a bit different. Sure, I think WotC is doing an absolutely terrible job of being the caretakers of D&D. I’ve made that clear several times over. There’s no fixing the corporate egregore at this point. So let’s pretend that I (or someone better) was in char ..read more

Yup. I got to play single parent today. I’ll be really glad when my wife returns tomorrow. I’m wiped. You don’t realize how much someone contributes until they go out of town for a day. Oof. I need to get rolling on my BRP Design Challenge submission. Deadline is coming up faster than I realized. So much to cover yet. I think I can safely say I’m just putting in the one submission. Disclaimer: Statements expressed in this article are strictly my opinion. If you disagree or have a different opinion, that’s okay. I’m not an expert on everything. I’m not always right. Planned Obsolescence in TTRPGs.

I think the days of one edition of a game going 10 years have passed. I’ve seen it happen a number of times now where I buy one edition of a game and two or three months later I see a second, third or fourth coming out. Much like cars, computers, gas stoves, and cell phones, TTRPGs have an ever-shortening lifespan attached to them. I don’t like it, but unfortunately I understand the phenomenon all too well. Game companies need money to survive. Rather than push out a massive volume of sourcebooks, sometimes their best option is to put out a newer, punched-up version of the original even if it ..read more

Fun. Photo by lil artsy on Pexels.com If “fun” wasn’t the first thing to come to mind, what would we be doing? Seriously, the sheer enjoyment of the whole spectacle of TTRPGs revolves around enjoyment, fun, excitement, and relaxation. If you’re getting something else out of your TTRPG experience, that’s great. I’ll never say, “You’re doing it all wrong.” But if we’re not having fun on some level, why are we even here? The very act of getting together to enjoy a shared experience with friends, family, or even random strangers is at the center of the TTRPG experience. That type of shared joy ha ..read more

May 5E Dungeons & Dragons…

Go away peacefully into history with love and light. As most people in the TTRPG space are aware by now, a new edition of Dungeons & Dragons is coming in September 2024. (Provided Wizards of the Coast doesn’t find some way to royally screw it up.) Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins have basically told us the Player’s Handbook is going to be completely different than the one from 2014 that we all know and love. I often joke that this is the new/not-new edition because they continue to cling to the notion that this version is somehow retro compatible. (*Here, let me pull out my 3.5 or 1st Ed ..read more
