We are looking for artists to illustrate our book series and we want you to apply! What You Get J & B Publishing is always on the lookout for talented artists. We accept a variety of mediums – everything from comics-style pencil-on-paper to illlustrated calligraphy to silk screens – and prefer to work with artists long-term. We pay artists a pre-negotiated, per-piece fee up front. Artists sell us the copyrights to these works, though we are happy if artists use said works to promote themselves, J & B Publishing or any of J & B Publishing’s fictional universes. In other words, we’r ..read more

The Universe-Centric Approach to Publishing

When I proposed co-founding J & B Publishing to my friend Jamal Barbari, I knew that we’d need to come up with something unique, some way to stand apart from the thousands of other small publishers. We both dove into the industry, cased the competition and contacted the most commercially successful authors we knew. What we found is that while it’s really hard to sell one-of books, series are much easier. The series advantage wasn’t just confined to famous universes like Stephen King’s Dark Towers or JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth, either. According to successful indie authors Michael Totten a ..read more

The Case For Religion
Ben Garrido's Blog
by authorbengarrido

There’s no coherent way to avoid nihilism without religion, broadly defined. It’s best to be religious for two reasons. First, religion by its very nature gives us something greater than ourselves to live meaningfully in service of, an alternative to moral relativism and other forms of nihilism. Secondly, and perhaps even more important, being religious in any intelligent sense logically necessitates ambiguity tolerance or, more prosaically, it requires us to admit the limitations in our own knowledge.  At this point I should point out that I’m not advocating for any religion in particula ..read more

Sing, oh Muse, of the man of many ghetto-fabulous devices, who wandered LAX of the land of California and Incheon of the land of Korea, doing so after sacking the shops and wineries of the famous Citadel of Oregon, taking with him many treasures and presents. Many were the security offices he saw and varied the airline representatives’ minds he came to know, and many woes did he suffer upon the airways, seeking to win his own return tickets and the security clearance of his comrades. Mighty Father Delta and Queen of Olympus, the matchless Korean Embassy, did allow Bendysseus to come near his ..read more

Logical Limitations of Mathematical and Abstract Modeling Approaches to Top-Down Educational Reform

Presented at the 2022 World Education Research Association, San Diego Abstract: This paper seeks to explain the mathematical and logical limits to policy modeling. In particular, it is suggested that mathematically vigorous, predictive models of social behavior and policy implementation are highly susceptible to unintended consequences, serious evaluation problems and policy failure. The fundamental logical and mathematical issues are explored through the modeling critique of Tomas Aquinas, mathematical chaos theory and the philosophical problems in bridging idealisms and observable reality. Surprising New Solution to the Trolley Dilemma

The trolley problem is a classic experiment in ethics. The scenario is like this: You can choose the path of an out of control trolley as it careens at a group of innocent people. You can do nothing and allow the train to hit the group OR you can change the tracks and intentionally murder one person, standing on the other track. Traditional philosophers, hidebound and conventional, typically waste time with questions of responsibility and utilitarianism. If, they argue, you care more about “doing no harm” then you allow the train to take its natural course and do nothing. If, on the other han ..read more

Why I Think Totalitarianism Matters Today
Ben Garrido's Blog
by authorbengarrido

Source The deepest foundation of my critique of totalitarian succor – yes, succor – is the simple fact that, of the people I grew up around, the most impressive, self-possessed and contented were almost all born in the United States before 1930. As a consequence, each of them lived through the Great Depression. The males were drafted into the military and made personally responsible for killing totalitarians. The females were supportive of this and materially sacrificed to ensure the grand moral visions of Hitler, Stalin and Kim Il-sung etc. did not spread globally. To avoid confusion, I’ll re ..read more
