Quality control is essential in medium and high voltage power cable manufacturing. In the first production phase the metal conductor is insulated with three layers of plastic. This phase is the most critical and prone to manufacturing defects. Current quality control systems measure the layer thicknesses of the three plastic layers with x-rays from several points around the cable. Power cables are also routinely tested after production in order to find defective products before installation.
