The Mystery of Making

I don’t know if its just artists’ minds that stumble haphazardly upon ideas, or indeed, whether its just how my mind works, but this post will illustrate an example of how things get made less by planning than by accident.  A recent tidy up in the studio brought this A3+ size sketch to light. It was a quick response made last year to the fire at Southwold harbour in Spring 2023. The event was quite dramatic, involving exploding gas cylinders and destroying one local business and severely damaging another.  In an earlier post on this From the Studio page I shared a large oil on board ..read more

Beginning work after a longish gap can feel daunting. What to paint? In which medium? How big? The answer for me in January was to start very small. For several years I have found simple shapes fun to ‘play’ with. I’m not sure why, but there is something that is just pleasing about slowly finding out what shape and colour will work well in the composition. In this 15cm square piece worked in acrylic inks on board, I enjoyed keeping the pigments translucent, and building up layers. I can’t explain what such work ‘means’, but that’s never bothered me. Each shape as I look at this seems to have ..read more

I hope you’ve got time to read to the end where there’s some very exciting local news :)) “Insecurity and paradox are baked into life and living itself.” The quote is Buddhist in origin. I’m not Buddhist but I like what they have to say. And, being honestly straightforward in general, the self-promotion that artists are expected to do, requiring steering a course of relentless positivity, I find a strain. And disturbingly untrue. However, don’t worry this will not be an outpouring of misplaced self revelations! I mainly just want to honour what my real. actual experience of ‘the artist’s li ..read more

Art is a form of stress reliever which is powered by abstract forms of designs. An artist uses his passion to sculpt a meaningful story through art depictions. You might encounter many novice admirers mixing the “contemporary” with “modern” art forms. However, there are a few differences between the art forms. If you want to get to the depth of these two art forms, remember that they belong to two periods of art history. While the modern art form originated and spanned from the 19th to mid-20th century, the contemporary art form is the current art style. Modern Norfolk artists practise both ..read more

Wintering A friend I sing with, spoke yesterday about looking forward to the Spring.  I get it.   Its November. We are surrounded by growing carpets of vivid oranges, yellows and reds as trees shed leaves they have extracted nutrients from, exposing these gorgeous colours. But this colour will wane over the next few months as winter takes its rightful place.   “Autumn Lane”, a contemporary painting in acrylic inks on paper,  reflects my joy of walking through this autumn season of colour in Suffolk lanes. It will feature in the December Studio SALE. (Deta ..read more

A portfolio is a showcase for the best work of an artist, whether professional or amateur. It will also present the style and method of their work, and will therefore include work across the whole range of the media they use whether that be drawing, painting in oil, watercolour, acrylic; collaged work, printmaking or sculpture. A portfolio would originally have been made physically. Since online platforms have been available an artist can easily make an online portfolio to showcase their art to potential buyers and to galleries and curators of exhibitions. A portfolio should… Establish a goo ..read more

Contemporary art recreates reality but keeps reality’s contradictory nature intact. It focuses on modern society’s current issues and asks us to address them. Understanding the Concept of Contemporary Art What is the Main Difference Between Modern and Contemporary Art? One simple answer to this question is “Time”. Modern art was said to be created between the 1860s and late 1960s. So, the art that was created after this period, like minimalist, conceptual, feminist, postmodern etc, falls under contemporary art. Another key difference between the two is that while modern art focuses more on ..read more
