Sticky Wicket
It’s a statement referring to trouble
That originated from the game of cricket
When wet lawns create such a muddle
It results in a sticking wicket.
Though rarely used stateside
When done so it can cause confusion
So that Americans seldom get behind
Such a charming old English expression.
But if one could only take the time
To understand the sport it’s drawn upon
The sense it makes would start to align
And they’d adopt it as part of their lexicon!

Inside Out
It’s hard to see what’s happening
When you’re on the inside
Instead, you should be viewing
The scene from the outside.
Only then can you objectively
Evaluate the entire scene
And see things more clearly
That which was unseen.
Because when you’re in the thick of it
It’s as if you’re wearing a blindfold
A blindfold that won’t permit
Reality as it is, truth be told!

Hurry
It’s the source of many a problem
And likely cause of worry,
It’s what happens when
We do things in a hurry.
Instead of taking our time
And doing them the right way
We risk being left behind
And unexpected delay.
The irony here is when
To save time we move too quickly
But end up having to do it again
Because our “work” is too sloppy!

Spending Time
There are so many ways
To spend one’s time,
That we treat it as a form of pay
Is a creation of our mind.
Perhaps one might think it OK
To bide one’s time,
Lest our chances slip away
Which certainly would a crime.
Or make our move without delay
So as not to waste any time,
Unless it’s to while away** the day
In which case that would be fine!

On Purpose
If we didn’t have a purpose
We’d never get out of bed
Having one is a must
On which all actions depend.
That’s why it’s good to realize
One should set one’s sights
And keep one’s eyes on the prize
As the best advice.
Because if that doesn’t happen
It’s like being adrift at sea,
Good things in life come when
One finds and follows one’s destiny!

Words
Sometimes they can take you
To the place you want to go
While others leave no clue
As to what you may want to know.
So many combinations
Put together in a certain order
Are the source of communication
Sometimes plucked from thin air.
Perhaps they could come
In the form of an amusing joke
Or a famous dissertation
Or a saying we love to quote.
Oh where would we be without words?
We’d be back in the Stone Age
To think such a thing is absurd
As it’s how ideas are conveyed!

Mirror, Mirror
Mirror, mirror, I ask myself,
To others, how do I seem?
Am I the worst or the best
Or is it somewhere in between?
Do I look wrinkled or do I look fatter
These thoughts make me want to shrink,
While knowing full well it should not matter
What others might or might not think.
It’s a disease that affects us all
In search of others’ approval
Which ultimately can be our downfall
And place us in a prison cell.
Asking others if we are worthy
What a foolish proposition to make,
When to be ourselves is our true destiny
As it’s the one thing no one ..read more

Gray Matter
They say it’s the most important part
Of a person’s anatomy
Even more so than the heart
Or the eyes we use to see.
They believe that it is our brain
That is the source of any decision
That we’d disappear is their claim
Without its ability to sense or reason.
Yet those who think this are denying
The truth of who we really are
Sadly, they are trying
To negate our spiritual nature!

Oikophobia
It’s a shame when you see
People going against their own culture
In preference for some foreign nationality
They consider to be so much better.
Which is prominent here in America
Among young and academics, it’s the thing to do,
A prevailing and popular phobia
That could lead to our cultural ruin.
Yet if one were to take an honest look
At so many lesser countries abroad
They’d see they’ve been sorely mistook
When they give those others such applause.
Even though it’s ironic to see
That dissenters are allowed to protest
As they claim ..read more

Competence
It’s what we all strive for
That can make the biggest difference
In our lives and so much more,
When we strive for competence.
As a goal, it’s not a hard sell,
Because when we can do things
And we can do them well,
That’s how we can spread our wings.
It will open up new horizons
And give our future its best chance
To get there all depends
On us having competence!
