Just a quick one this time as we added a small patch today, now live on Steam, GOG and Epic. Console versions will be live in a few weeks - these always take a bit longer to go through the approval/certification processes.
Please remember as always: there are potential spoilers in the notes below!
Hotfix notes for 3 July 2024
- Fixed the bug of being able to infinitely pick up one of the Barter Crew Special (jackpot trade) numberplates in Narembeen.
- Added pine pitch to Karak’s shop and Tin Man’s shop as part of Lily’s quest.
- Clarified the objective for ‘Of Liberty and Necessity’ that you ..read more

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your patience while we worked on this major update to get the Broken Roads 1.2 patch live.
We've taken on board the feedback from your reviews to add features, make changes, include new options, completely open up the early game, and greatly expand on companion reactions.
The work is not at all done and there is much more still to come, but we hope you enjoy this first big patch which focuses on all four origin stories through to the gates of Merredin.
We did also tackle some mid and late game moments that players requested, so take note that THERE ARE SPOILERS IN ..read more

Work on our May patch is now almost complete, and we are allowing English players to access the latest changes while the new text (over 10,000 words) is being translated. We have created a new beta branch on Steam - unfortunately GOG and Epic users will not have this option, but as soon as it is possible, we’ll open this up on those platforms too.
We are going to keep updating as we polish and add content, so English users who want to get updates as soon as they are ready should simply stay on the new EnglishUpdates branch.
Keep scrolling to see a list of some of the different improvements we ..read more

To the Broken Roads community,
This launch has been a rough one. We’re glad so many people have enjoyed playing the game. We’ve loved watching the streams, engaging with you all and hearing about your positive experience with Broken Roads.
But we know that, overall, we’ve fallen short of player expectations in some key areas and in many ways we’ve not delivered the quality game we had hoped to ship, so we’re changing that. Our work on Broken Roads is far from over.
We have taken the criticism on board. There’s a lot we can improve and a lot we can outright redo because it just isn’t good enoug ..read more

In early June 2022, we were excited to welcome a local high school work experience candidate, Will C., to join Drop Bear Bytes on our distributed journey through game development. During the course of a week, Will met with the leads of different departments and got insider insight into what it’s like to work across 3 different time zones, give a report in each of our daily standups, and provide reproduction steps for some of our more pernicious bugs.
We sat down with Will on his last day and asked him the hard questions. His responses are below.
What was the most unexpected aspect of your wor ..read more

Broken Roads delayed until early 2024
Hi everyone.
Since 2019 the Drop Bear Bytes team has been pouring their hearts & souls into Broken Roads, spending countless hours designing, troubleshooting, and adjusting to player feedback. While Broken Roads is still coming, we’ve made the decision to delay the release to allow for additional polish time and QA manpower plus resources to ensure a higher quality bar for the thousands of permutations that can arise. While the game is now content complete, it is also coming in longer than we originally anticipated at ~30 hours of gameplay and nearly 4 ..read more

The Ardath Pub is a characterful establishment where a motley crew of artists, thieves, and thugs congregate to drink, play darts and get up to mayhem. To bring this place to life, Sara Laubscher, Lead Environment Concept Artist, worked closely with our Narrative Director, Leanne Taylor-Giles, in order to maintain an authentic ‘Aussie vibe’. Through pokie machines and a pool-table-turned-impromptu music stage around the back, we aimed to demonstrate the rowdy charm of the Ardath way of life.
We heavily referenced the real-life Ardath Hotel pub, which Leanne had personally visited. Sara creat ..read more

Broken Roads at gamescom 2023
It’s the end of August and that means gamescom again! We sent a small crew to Cologne to show off Broken Roads to European press as part of the Australian contingent in IGEA’s booth and were very stoked to see Broken Roads’ key art blown up huge on the stand walls.
We demo’d Broken Roads for three days straight, met a ton of fellow developers working on some awesome projects, took a quick look at what the AAA studios are up to, and of course checked out the most intriguing new indie games in the works.
One of the highlights of this year’s event was showing off the ..read more
