Throughout her high school career, Mulvane’s Teagan Garrison was a defender on the Wildcats’ soccer team, but last year she was tasked with being more of a weapon offensively.
“One area I’m wanting to improve on is my shot and also forward abilities, as I primarily play defense but last year I had to step up to forward because that is where I was needed for the team,” said Garrison. “I will most likely have to step to that position again this year and have been working on this area in my trainings I do on Sundays with the mission soccer program.”

Well before the first game, Goddard baseball coach Jim Foltz planned to rely on his experienced players, such as Mason Healy and Coltin Watkins, who are four-year starters.
But veteran players been even more necessary than first planned.
“Our experience has been a huge factor in our season as we have had injuries and fewer numbers to choose from depth standpoint this year,” Foltz said. “We also have been able to extend our pitching depth with the senior class, a much-needed part for the expanded regular season we have taken on.

While Hal Leep is the only returning state qualifier to the Circle boys tennis team, he’s not the only experienced player.
Pablo Gaitan Lleo is a foreign exchange student, who also plays varsity singles and started playing when he was 3 years old.
“Pablo is a sponge when it comes to being coachable,” Circle coach Shawn Lehecka said. “He has a powerful shot and a large knowledge of the mechanics…. He has been focusing on making the adjustments to the wind and humidity that Kansas has to offer.”
Gaitan Lleo had some expectations about Kansas tennis, though — his sister, Alejan ..read more

Russ Smith of Central Burden was an all-state baseball player last year, but because of an injury he occurred in football, he will not be able to play this season.
Smith suffered a separation to his AC joint in his shoulder and later found out he tore his labrum. He is now in the post-surgery process and trying to get his movement back.
Last season, he posted a 0.46 ERA, with a 122 strikeouts in 43.2 innings.

Lauryn Vogt of Hillsboro has spent years dedicating herself to swimming, and it all paid off last season as she came home a state champion in the 50 free.
“I swim with my club swim team the Nitros of Kansas during the offseason and before the season starts I set goals and try to achieve them,” Vogt said. “One thing I am really working on right now is improving my underwater skills, making them faster with a stronger kick. Last year I had a shoulder injury early fall which I was in physical therapy for and then later developed mononucleosis in the winter. Since then I hav ..read more

Now in her fourth year as the head coach and fifth season with Salina South, softball coach Brea Vidrine is gearing up to get her girls back to the state tournament.
After a fourth-place finish a season ago, coach Vidrine had to take a step back during that time as she was on maternity leave.
“It was great getting to watch my girls receive a fourth-place finish last year,” Vidrine said. “The girls coming in have big shoes to fill, but I have no doubt that they are willing to do whatever it takes to step up.”
